George Michael Royal Wedding song (no...really, I'm serious)

Tonight I heard a snippit of the song George Michael has recorded for the Royal Wedding (a version of Stevie Wonder's "You and I").

This may have been a better post for the Easy Listening thread. But being that he (was) a big part of the AC format...being that this event may create an interest level similar to Charles' and Diana's wedding...does this song have a snowball's chance on Mainstream or soft AC? Or is this akin to a novelty song?

As an artist, does he fit on American radio or is he over, no matter the song? Is he damaged goods? (Or maybe he might still be relevant but this particular song sucks)? Whatever the reason and side of the fence you're on, I'm curious if PDs today take him seriously.
 
I think it'll be more a novelty song, like Elton John remaking his own hit "Candle In the Wind" for Princess Diana's funeral.

As far as George Michael being damaged goods, I won't say he is. I think if the right song came, radio would give him a chance. The AC station here still plays a good amount of George Michael, namely "Faith" and "Father Figure".
 
I still hear "Faith" and "Father Figure" here also. "One More Try" used to be somewhat popular but has been relegated to special stunts/programs now.

Speaking of Elton, George re-made "Don't Let The Sun Go Down" live with Elton in the very early 90s - I hear that one occasionally. I like it more than the original.

It's interesting that at the time that came out, I remember George Michael was on top of the world. Meanwhile, Elton was still out there but his music (and personal life) were in somewhat a slump. He had hits but for every "Sacrifice," we had "A Word in Spanish" and "Club at the End of the Street." I thought at the time it was great for Elton to be on the track with George because of the exposure. Then not too long afterwards, Elton was beginning that uptick in his career (especially the "Lion King" material) and his health had improved after going in for treatment.

George was fighting Sony and becoming tabloid fodder. Little by little, his star diminished.

But, as I heard someone say about Train not to long ago, you're only one hit song away from a comeback.
 
I thought he was making a comeback due to "Eli Stone". He was in Eli's fantasies but then he actually made a guest appearance playing himself and he was so good he should try acting.
