George Waslo

Thirty five years ago this month, my mentor, George Waslo dropped dead at a hamfest at Coney Island. He was an engineer at WKRC AM, as well as the contract engineer at WAKW where I started in radio. He nurtured my interest in engineering starting when I was a 14 year old board op. With his help, in 1975, I started working at WKRC's new (at the time) transmitter site at Cold Spring,KY about 48 hours after his passing. Anyone still around who remembers George?

George was a consultant when Reading High School Radio Station WRCJ - 89.3-FM - was in the planning stages in 1969. I believe much of the equipment for WRCJ was purchased at his direction. George was 59 years old when he passed away.

That doesn't surprise me. He was big into CCA transmitters & IIRC, WRCJ had a 10 watt CCA. I did visit WRCJ around 1969 or 1970...there was a high school girl on the air during the hour I was there. George let me help him build 107.1 in Milford around 1969. I'm glad someone else remembers him. If it wasn't for him, it's hard to say what path my life would have taken. Thanks for sharing that.
