georgia association of broadcasters web site

Today I visited the gab web site trying to help a buddy who is relocating to the state find employment. Are they still in business? If so this may be the worst web site I have ever seen in my life. There is virtually nothing there. Back in the day it was a great organization when Bill Sanders was in charge. Now it appears to be almost a joke. Why would any self respecting radio station want to be associated with it? What do they do for radio stations in the state? I see they're having a job fair in Athens. No wonder students aren't interested in getting into radio if this is the group that's supposed to represent the industry in the state.

I've been contacting GAB board members over the past five years to improve it as I feel it should be considered somewhat of a "front door" for our state's broadcasting industry but so far, my pleadings have fallen on deaf ears. There are good people at the GAB and on the board but the website doesn't give a good impression at all. I really don't think there is an excuse to not improve it but it's apparently not on anyone's radar screen.

For anyone going to a radio job fair, does anyone know whether or not a college degree in Broadcasting is required to attend?

According to the GAB web site: "The Job Fair provides an opportunity to seek future employees, share & earn a full FCC EEO Prong 3 credit". That last part is the kicker. Stations can put documentation of their participation in their EEO public file. It really has nothing to do with hiring people, it's smoke and mirrors.

Perhaps the GAB has already accepted that it, like over-the-air broadcasting, is quickly becoming obsolete. The board's plan is probably to do as little as possible, not waste time preparing for the future, and ride their board seat for as long as it lasts.

I did a quick search of Georgia's along with the surrounding associations (Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi) and it seems that all of them are so flush with cash they do not need anymore members since no where on any of the index pages did it have a link to becoming a member of any of the associations. On Ohio's and Alabama's you had to really search for the information. I finally gave up on the rest of them.
