Get Jesse?

You know, its pretty sad when Q13 news seems to have more credibility as a professional news cast compared to KING 5. They lost me with that asinine "Woooaaah-OHH-OHHHA" promo. That's all I need to ensure that i'll be watching KOMO and KIRO from there on out.

I quit watching TV news on a regular basis about five years ago. Now I'll only watch if there's a major news story, local or national.

I think KOMO radio is a lot better at airing important information. As much as we complain about Seattle radio at times, we are fortunate to have a 24/7 newsradio station in Seattle (similar to KGO/WCBS, what have you).

This is an interesting thread with all the folks expressing their love for KIRO because of all the long time reporters. Never-mind Bob Jordan let about half of the long timers go in his two years at the station.

Meanwhile, over at KING, Gannett must agree with this board as Meg Coyle has been bounced back to weekend mornings. Danielle Leigh, new to town, takes over weekend evenings. I saw her do the KONG newscast last weekend, she has a great delivery and style but her voice is a little funny to my ears.

Greg Copeland has apparently inherited the 9PM weeknight slot from Rob Piercy, and Natasha Ryan, long time a freelancer, loses the weekend morning slot she's had for a few weeks. I think Copeland just isn't that good. He seems like a nice guy, looks the part with the graying hair, but fumbles the script at least twice a newscast. Natasha Ryan is quite good, but loses out on an anchor slot. Shaniqua Manning, who had previously done one weekend evening with Schauff, seems perpetually buried at NWCN. And of all the NWCN anchors (Johnson, Piercy, Coyle, Manning, Copeland) she's by far the best.

We still got Steve Raible, Amy Clancy, Chris Legeros and a few other veteran reporters on KIRO - KOMO's gotten too cheap with the Sinclair buyout - seriously, I still think Sinclair told Dan Lewis to leave so they could "lower costs" - but I might be wrong, KING is the same thing, CHEEP! Gannett sucks and losing several people on KING is not good at all. I hope channel 5 goes down to last place in news. KCPQ is too "young" for me and like I said, I can't stand MJ McDermott doing wx in the mornings! Report the weather, not your favorite little poodle.

For once, I would love hear KCPQ play some good rockin' thrash metal as their bumper music. This pop stuff is lame.....

KCPQ's graphics are just abysmal. I loved the graphics on KING; I don't know why they had to be changed to this new setup. I guess we should just be glad that we still get to hear the "KING 5" moniker. There are so many stations that just go by "ABC 7" or what have you.

I must agree that Shaniqua Manning seems to be perpetually overlooked and buried over on NWCN most of the time. However, with Gannett changing the face of KING5, perhaps it may be Shaniqua's turn to be in the spotlight. I say let Shaniqua be the weekend evening anchor.

And I believe that Sinclair told Dan Lewis to pound sand and Gannett told Jean Enersen to go pound sand. These large corporations do not want to pay such large salaries. They would rather hire three people right out of school.

It certainly will be interesting to keep watching this scene.

However, I will do it from a distance. I just moved to Phoenix, so I'll be commenting as a long-distance observer, just like formeraa.

And speaking of "singing", KNDO/KNDU have a promo for their "Wake Up Northwest" with a whiney female singer. Wow...a new low for NBC Right Now - which doesn't even have a STUDIO in Yakima anymore! Yes, just a TINY sales office on Yakima Avenue for KNDO. Years ago, KNDO had a studio, master control, satellite dishes and anchors, directors and cameramen...not now. It's all in Kennewick.

I was surprised to hear that. In its day, the KNDO studios were well-equipped. They had a mix of new mid-grade gear and lightly used top-of-the-line stuff. KIMA had better cameras, but ours were well cared-for, so you didn't see much difference. They were the first in the market to produce color news footage, and had their own processing lab on-site.

When I was there, KNDU wasn't much more than a satellite. They covered some breaks with local commercials and had a short segment in the newscasts. I hear that the rolls have been mostly reversed now. Given the size of the Yakima property, that's just weird!

Like I said, even though KNDO is pretty much a semi-satellite nowadays with Pasco news, reporters and Tim Adams, from Pasco, they've got the best news set out of the 3 locals. KCYU doesn't count because their newscast is KNDU-produced, and the CW is KEPR/KIMA's .2 meaning that they have 10PM news - ALL Tri-Cities! Nothing from Yakima!
Come over here and look at KAPP/KVEW and KIMA/KEPR. Their news sets are about as laughable as a community college production. One desk, one anchor at KAPP/KVEW (usually Kevin Uretsky or Yasmeen Hassan), with two in the mornings, all from KVEW. There is only one reporter for KAPP and nobody else left for channel 35.
KIMA looks horrible. 3 HDTVs all displaying the Action News logo, and only one anchor, one weather guy taped from Pasco and Alan Sillence sports. 10 years ago that was 2 anchors, Stu Seibel who was at KIMA through the 80s and 90s before retiring in 2007 (WX), and Alan Sillence again. Fisher must have had loads of budget cuts on their Eastern WA stations. I can't imagine what KLEW looks like. Probably worse!

And one more thing to add: Over two decades at KIRO and Steve Raible has not been told to "pound sand" yet! Thank god. It seems as though Cox likes Steve.

Maybe being the last locally owned (Cowles) media out of Spokane is an advantage here. KNDU has a hand me down ENG vehicle, Ford Explorer from Q6, but it's loads better than KVEW' old Econoline and KEPR, 20 plus year old Chevy live van. Sinclair must not have any old vehicles to spare and KXLY parent company is treating KVEW/KAPP like the red-headed step sister. I'm surprised they haven't sold it off. Why they use a night time graphic set indicates they think Yakima/Tri-Cities looks the same at night.

The times i've been to the Lewiston\Clarkston\Orofino area, KLEW looked liked a low-budget small-market station with big market graphics. Even seen it on YouTube.

Yeah, these Yakima stations make KIRO 7 in Seattle look like WCBS in New York. Awful.
Have you ever seen KIMA's 5PM news and heard the monotone robotic voice of reporter Samina Engel? I can't believe KIMA would even HIRE her. She sounds like a girly robot. One of the worst reporters I have ever heard - sometimes she's so bad I HAVE to flip to KNDO. Hopefully she doesn't read this...
Watch this report on pot sales done by Samina Engel on Thursday's newscast and you'll think she makes Alison Grande or Keith Eldridge look like they are from a major network!

So... took a look at a few twitter feeds...

Last weekend Meg Coyle anchored the weekend morning news with Natasha Ryan. KOMO is the only station to have a dual-anchor format on the weekend morning news in this market ... ever. Except KOMO does it by having the second anchor also do the weather (first Rick Van Cise, now Theron Zahn).

Danielle Leigh did the weekend evening news with John Langler. He's done a few fill in anchor shifts and seems pretty well suited for the role. Is Gannett investing in their anchor teams at KING, going back to two anchors on the weekend evenings and adding a second to weekend mornings? The seers on this board thought all they were going to do was cut.

Last time my wife watched KING5, I happened to glance at the screen and noticed only faces and names I didn't recognize. (I don't like to watch TV news anyway...waste of time.)

An addition of a second anchor on weekend mornings is long-overdue -- like 20+ years overdue. Ten years ago, I remember they paired Pat McReynolds with Carolyn Douglas for a few months (but I later found out that Carolyn was ill at the time and the addition of Pat was simply to ensure that someone was there if Carolyn was unable to continue anchoring the newscast).

KING 5 is running promos now for the Morning News with current anchors Joyce Taylor and Mark Wright, and Rich Marriott and Tracy Taylor, but with Mimi Jung added to the newsdesk. There is video of Mark with Joyce and Mimi flanking him on both sides. So changes coming next Monday, September 8th. Does this mean 3 talking heads anchoring all morning? I guess we shall see.
