Get Live, NOW!

Oh come on - you cannot tell me that NO station in Las Vegas is doing any ALL WEEKEND mixes for the official summertime kick off party weekend, Memorial Day Weekend! ..Or is it happening but no one is bothering to mention it?

Well 98.5 KLUC has a "throwback" weekend, but I don't know how you can call it "throwback weekend" since they're also playing current hits in the middle... but Hot 97.5 is in the mix right now.

My favorite "throwback" I heard them play was Rappin 4 Tay-Playas Club. Wow did that sound good, I totally forgot about that song. I don't recall ever getting such a nostalgic feeling from a hip hop song before.

Both KLUC and Hot 97 are horrible as it stands, to think Hot 97 would capitalize on the "Urban" demo and mix every weekend to throw songs that normally wouldn't be played during the week. Similar to what KPWR in LA does during their "Cali Caliente Power mix Weekends". The PD's on these two stations are either two scared or have some else run the show for them. KLUC is more "teeny-bop", although doesn't explain their 30 and over morning show, and Hot 97 is confused, one day they are "dirty south", the next day they are from the "bay" and so on.....

Now 104.3 were doing great until Royce took over, now that is a flop. The Party is ok until they play Brittany Spears or Pink, J.Lo, Rick should of never fired the midday mixers they had on, that was as close as we got to having a decent mix show in Vegas. Vibe 94.5 Has late night mixing on Saturdays but that is too deep club music, after 3 years they have not even tried to have a open "DJ/Mixers" call to have local DJ's to use during the week and put on, for example, a Lunch time mix show.

I love Power 106 in L.A.! They are staying true to their original sound and roots, despite the fact that they refuse to let go of "Where hip hop lives" slogan. However, unlike Atlanta's 95.5 The Beat, Power 106 has no direct current music urban competition, in addition to the fact they've outlasted everyone else over the years, so technically they are "Where hip hop lives". Atlanta's "New #1 for hip hop", 95.5 The Beat, is also rhythmic just like KPWR, and is in a city with two other Urban / hip hop formats. In reality, Power 106 is L.A.'s Party Station, or hits & hip hop - which by the way is my favorite sound. They aren't better than Miami's Power 96 when it comes to my style of playlist and music, but they are pretty good at keeping their station sounding fresh, live, and interesting without having to wait for a holiday or something as a special excuse to do it. I've always loved the rhythmic dance sound, and this is where my fascination and love towards mix shows developed from because the mixes were always where dance & bass remixes could be mostly found. Perfect example, WiLD 94.9 late 90's - early 00's. A dance format is cool too, but still kind of lacks the variety in sound that I like. I like what rhythmic top music has become once again today, but it seems like these days not that many people are capable of putting together decent lyrics within songs anymore, which somewhat kills many good instrumentals. That, in addition to the fact that the complex, creatively done old school futuristic sounding Timbaland style beats that were hot in the late 90's has now died to make way for these slow, boring, easy to make beats in today's slower hip hop and r&b. Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss" was the last song in mainstream to actually use that Timbaland style. I'm just glad that this phase of everything being around 75-80bpm with lyrics that mostly talk about nothing has pretty much now passed.

As far as stations not playing anything new and different in their mixes, that is just completely boring to me. During a mixshow, that is where I especially want to hear and discover new things sprinkled in from time to time. It's even worse when only the original versions of hits are used in mixshows, but I still say a mixshow is better than no mixes at all!
