Like Jason said, ground radials can be placed under a deck, (and I do build an antenna for decks which is 6.5 feet tall!), or on a deck, and is easily covered with an indoor/outdoor grass or rug easily and cheaply purchased at your local home center......If you run wires inside the house, YOU WILL GET YELLED AT; TRUST ME, BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!!...and that doesn't work well anyway, so don't attempt it or we may have to call you BILL BOBBIT (joke).
......................................
In answer to your EDM 100 question; yes it is a pretty powerful unit even with a very very poor antenna. It does a good job of achieving as long a range as the sstran with my antenna does~PROVIDED YOU HAVE A CLEAR FREQUENCY. And you don't want to step on a commercial broadcaster. That is why I advocate the AM so much over FM; especially in cities, the dial is so crowded that it is hard to find a clear frequency on FM to use, let alone not interfere...................
It is much easier to find a clear or nearly clear AM frequency than a FM, and the signal most likely will be better for nearly all people.............Here is what I think the advantages are of the two:
1. With the FM, literally, if you live in an apartment building with many residents to reach, you may be able to get by without an external antenna at all with the EDM 100. If you wish to reach those outside your flat, and extend the antenna outside, it will, for the most part be illegal, and in a city, that is risky.
2. With the AM, your building will hear it, and those surrounding you will hear it without being illegal at all. ..............................
That is the major differences as I see them between the two........my 4 cents; and I need change for my nickle! :))......Carl ([email protected])
______________

I forgot to tell you:
COPPER PIPES: not as good as a radial system, BUT; here is where this may fail (found this out personally!).....some plumbing systems are copper thruout, then culminate in a rubber or pvc fitting that connects to a city water system. That may be hard to find out if you can not look directly or don't want to ask a landlord, but if that is the case, chances are the copper water pipe idea is null and void.......if you don't want to lay a radial system as I described (Jason described this too), the only thing to do, short of running wires to ground rods, which also may not be allowed is to connect to the grounded electrical system in your complex..................COVERAGE: THAT IS THE THE BIG ? I ALWAYS GET...answer is difficult but basic; a clear frequency is what you need to start with...between 1500 and 1700kHz.......if you have that, you are half way there. Exactly one half of AM part 15 broadcasters prefer their antennas in the air, and a third floor flat places you there; I prefer having it on the ground, but that is me and I grew up in AM broadcasting.
The sstran, with a clear frequency and proper set up does as far (my reports, and those of my customers) as 5 miles.......1, very strong, 2, very good, 3, listenable on a good car radio, 4, listenable on a good car radio or external antenna, 5, static and fading, and this is daytime reception on ideal conditions. In your case, you don't have ground conductivity, so a person living in a state with good ground conductivity and installing in the ground may find better range..........I hope that answers your questions!.....now, you don't have to email me unless you need an antenna!!!...Carl
______________
