Tape is why the 1970s syndicated version didn't make it.
I remember that WAPI (now WVTM)/13 Birmingham would include
the name of that week's surprisee in its TV Guide listing
for the show; WQXI (now WXIA)/11 Atlanta did the same thing.
Part of the show's appeal was that the name of the person
being honored was supposed to be as much of a surprise to
the audience as to the honoree. Plus live, you never knew just
how the person would react. Lowell Thomas, for example, sat
there with a disgusted look on his face for the entire show.
I, too, am a bit skeptical that the show can work today, live
or not. After all, there's the Biography Channel and the
nightly Biography series on A&E. I agree with you that celebrities
and their "biographies" are a dime a dozen; what was novel in
1952, when This Is Your Life debuted on television, is now just
an overworked concept.
But it will be interesting to see what Reege does with it.
