What an incestuous market. I guess you can’t get anyone with talent to move to the arm pit of New York State anyway (I used to think that was Utica). What a sad market you have let yourself become, shame on all of you. I remember when Binghamton had good radio, management that cared, and jocks that did a SHOW. Most of you don’t even know what a “show” is, you’re too busy doing your SHIFT and trying to get your [rip and read] production done so you can have lunch at the Great China Buffet.

Almost every station in your market has decent equipment, there is no excuse. I have heard markets larger than yours that still operate from a double wide in a cow pasture, with 1991 technology, that sound better than Binghamton.

Do some imaging…barter it out if you have to. Get some real web sites…you can barter that out too. Do some show prep and stop reading liners about free birthday cakes…I know you all have the internet. Spend $2,500 a year on a music test…I know you can afford it paying your jocks $20,000 a year.

GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER BINGHAMTON. Before you BECOME market 255, you already sound like it.

You're living in the past. Time to change your calendar to 2007. Listeners don't want to hear a show - they want music. The don't give a rip about who a DJ is. Imaging is thought of as commercials by the listener. Imaging = bad.
There are stations in Binghamton with personalities and jingles and big production. They also don't pull any ratings...

I personally think you both have a point. When I did radio there 15 years ago, there ws fun radio. Sure you wwere required to show up 1 hour befroe the show, do some prep, and bs with the jock before..Wasn't as corporate.

I do remember a time when I worked at the Hawk, John Davison was the PD then and he came in the studio to discuss ratings with Steve Cook...Do they still do this?? During your show?? by the way, John was congratulating Steve on his "monster numbers*..

Good old Binghamton radio...

I promise you Masked Manager; I’m privileged to much more research than you. I mean that in the most respectful way. I don’t work any where close to Binghamton anymore, and I don’t work in a small market.

No one who programs in the “Less is more” environment of 2007 will tell you different. You are correct to say people want more music and less “DJ chatter”. When they say “DJ Chatter” they mean “Liners” (especially liners about birthday cakes and how you can get a great deal at Vestal Chevy this weekend). There is NO major market PD telling their jocks to “stop entertaining”, and “stop the show prep”. There is no PD saying to their Imaging Director “Stop communicating effectively the benefits of the station to our P1’s”. They ARE saying “Get better and get faster at relating to our P1’s”, and “Get in our listeners head more efficiently”.

What you are suggesting is an excuse to do poor radio, an excuse to slack off. If you think you know radio in 2007 then get your hands on some of that research, and tell me I’m wrong. Until then, I guess I’ll expect status quo on your “Shift”. And I’ll expect people to keep leaving Binghamton by the thousands.

This is a wake up call- the media is the only thing you have right now to help the area bounce back. Unless a major corporation moves to town with lots of jobs, TV, Radio, and the Newspaper is the only line of communication to instill pride in your community. Continue to do nothing and you’ll find yourself at U-Haul soon too.

I totally disagree. There is some very talented jocks in this town. These few also take a great deal of pride in what they do and
I can tell you I spend many hours on show prep and on our station we have very little talk, and what we do talk about is compelling. I do agree in this voice track age many jocks go in the studio burn a whole show in a matter of minutes that is disgraceful. Just because a show is tracked does not mean the quality needs to suffer, but thats what you get these days, because you have on jock that is voice tracking several stations a day. Thats what needs to stop!! Lets get the jocks back in the studios and get rid of the voice tracks.

The radio people here in Binghamton, are very dedicated to their jobs and our community... and any other belief flies in the face of the endless hours of work and additional volunteer time to the worthy causes we believe in.

The economy in Greater Binghamton is turning the corner, thanks to growth in manufacutring, healthcare, education and start-up firms. Trends had been improving for a couple years and finally showed sustained year-to-year growth for the first time in 20 years. I assure you, anyone not serious about our community is long gone and whether those left are friend or foe, none deserve to have their commitment questioned.

Get out of your bubble. Drive to another market and listen to it for 1 hour, then tell me Binghamton radio is not lazy. Your next excuse is “They are a bigger market, they have more resources”. Go to Poughkeepsie even…Small market that sounds light years ahead of Binghamton. I bet all of you can think of at least three people in your building right now who are “4 and hit the door” people. I can think of three at CC right now. I can think of 4 at citadel, 2 at WLTB. All of these people are the highest paid people at those stations too. I’m not questioning it…I know it… and I heard it the last time I was in town.

I don’t care whether you change or not. I just find it amusing that you will defend this crap you put on the air as hard work. Reading from the Complete Sheet is not Prep. The photo shop graphics on your sites look like my kid made it. Defend it…lol. Honestly, I’m going to stop posting because I think you need to get off this board and work on your affidavits.

Have a good lunch.

You don't work anywhere close to Binghamton, yet you stand by the punch clock of every station in town?

Well for every one clock watcher you have I can name two or three who are each now wearing the hats of what 5 people use to do... considering I'm in NYC a couple times a week for work, I hear a wide variety of stations there and on my commute and I can tell you, some much larger markets make me cringe, with mistakes you expect here, not markets 1, 11, 17, & 53.

Cool down bucko...get off the cases of the Binghamton jocks...I managed several stations in Binghamton before consolidation...and many of the jocks that were in the market then are still there...all good jocks and all dedicated....I had the opportunity to drive through the market not long ago and the jocks I listened too in Binghamton offered the same passion they did years ago..you obviously know alot about the business from your comments...but before you ride off into the sunset on your big horse and take shots at undeserving dedicated jocks...you might want to fire a couple of rounds at executives at the large consolidators...if there's any complacency it might be because the consolidators took the fun out of the business...employees are numbers and it's all about the bottomline...careers in the radio business in todays enviroment is nearly impossible...In many small markets like Binghamton...consolidators like CC offer there voicetrackers a whopping one hour fee to produce their 4 or 5 hour show...now that's enough to make anyone excited about their shift....It's virtually impossible to remain pumped if your deflated at every turn...Hang in there Binghamton...

First off Justin, I am not attacking you, TJ, or anyone in your company. I know you work hard, and I Know TJ is a great guy who also works hard. I also know you and your company try really hard to be the “local” group, and that is commendable. The problem is the “Big” stations are still very complacent. That is hurting your market and you cannot deny that. The same people who were lazy when I was in Binghamton are in the same positions (except for Barb Fox…how is she?...lol). I’m not trying to sit on a “high horse”; I’m trying to get the point across to you that YOU are the only thing that can help your market. If you don’t want to read it, then don’t.

You will not convince me that the market is healthy, in radio or elsewhere. Stop reading me your ridiculous statistics. You know your local government is moving low-income families from the city to Binghamton just to keep the city status. I would like Binghamton to be healthy though, because it will always have a soft spot in my heart.

It's more like you've got a soft spot in your head, than in your heart. As Sunset said, there are a LOT of jocks in Binghamton who have been there a long time, and are good, talented people. They work hard, they sound good. Let's see..
Don Morgan, Roger Neel, Dana Potter, Thunder, John Davison and so many more. For the size of the market, Bingo sounds pretty good. Now stop beating up on the people who work there, and let's move on.

I didn't mention myself, I'm no radio superstar, I'm just greatful to be blessed to work in a field I enjoy. I have had the pleasure to work with and know so many great people in the field, both here in Binghamton and in NYC. Do I always see eye-to-eye with all of them, of course not, but I'd never make assumptions into their careers, I understand we're a product of our surroundings and the same struggles in Binghamton are being felt across the board in markets of all sizes... how do we make good radio, remain relevent to an audience with evergrowing options and do so without the tools and assistance from the corporate bottom line.

As for Binghamton, the area... moving in nyc transplants to keep city status? I think we all remember those rumors and gossip in the 80's. Well, there is no "mark" to remain a city... There are cities of all sizes all across this country... from 200 to 8.2 million people, and it all depends on how the municipality was incorporated. Look no farther than nearby cities of Norwich (7,000), Wilkes-Barre (43,100), Elmira (30,900), Ithaca (29,900), and Oneonta (13,300) to see a variety of population levels in the latest census with communities incorporated as a city. Are you a conspiracy theorist?

conspiracy theorist?

I just got some inside info on some big changes coming to Binghamton by MONDAY!

- Oz is coming back to the Whale to do mornings.
- Steve is going back to Star to do mornings with Mark and Meg. Star is also changing back to CHR with McCoy programming it from Columbus.
- Jacko is returning to mix to do AM Drive, Middays, PM Drive, and Overnights
- Dan Michaels is crossing the street (again) back to CC to be the van washer and traffic manager. (he will also be VTing weekends on WINR)
- The Whale is changing Back to CHR and Thunder is very excited about it.
- 104 is changing back to oldies with Doug Moser as PD and Wally as APD/MD/Mornings (they are bringing back the pink dotted van too)
- WLTB is changing to alternative for a week then back to AC. Dana is going to do mornings with Barb Fox, Doc Wells and Westy. (John and Chris are going to the Giant to help make the Birthday Cakes) Don Perkins has promised to get them a brand new (used) round pot board!
- Scappy is teaming up with Ray Ross for the new HD 1360…Hits and Hip Hop (with Polka too).
- 106.7 is increasing power to 12 watts.

Oh cool.....I get to work outside in the hot sun washing the station vehicles, and will get to talk up Pat Boone and Sammy Davis Jr. twice a week. Plus my staff that I will be managing will get to produce and dub all of the spots while I'm out detailing....I rule at Armor All. Anyone want to join me? LOL!!! I'm so excited about my new job at CC I could piss my pants right now. Sorry Steve and Dana, I have to go fill my bucket with soap and water and get a clean sponge.

LOL...

just don't use dishsoap to make ur bubbles for the initial wash... I read today that the degreasing agent actually eats the wax and protective coat of the paint, as if it were trying to remove grime from pots and pans... just a heads up dan! ;-)

Shhhh. Don't blow my cover. :D Actually, that does sound appealing to me, and when HD finally hits Binghamton AM, it may actually make sense! ;D

Nice to see this board get amped-up. I never worked in Bingo, but I always thought it was a cool "small market." So many talented personalities started their careers there: Biondi, Fred, Grease and many others... and what seminal radio stations, like The Big E in the top 40 ear and 'AAL in the progressive days.

Jon, your Binghamton Radio site is a real treat for radio geeks 'n freaks, trolls and dorks like me. I always "check out the signals" when I drive through the market on my way to visit family now living in North Jersey.

For the record, I think radio in Bingo shows more light than darkness. It's 2007... we're all working our asses off to do more with less. Sometimes we're the windshield, sometimes we're the bug. As to guys who never left the market, clearly, they enjoy living there and being part of the community, just like so many people who chose to stay in Buffalo, another market that takes its knocks for bad weather and God only knows how many other things.

It's always better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Be well.

Man I loved Binghamton whe I was there in the early 70's..granted radio was fun..REALLY fun, but the Hunan Man may be trying to get a rise out of those who do just a "shift"..they are in all industries, and they'll always be there I guess. Basically it comes down to US to making our own environment, and be as entertaining as we can be within the framework of the corporate sandbox.

I hope The Triple Cities can bounce back..there is no reason a beautiful part of the state can not thrive even without GAF, and the show company.

Is Lupo's Char Pit still turning out speidis? I loved that place..

Excuse me it's time for a break...

"It's 8:21 on the WENE clock at Gail Petit's Valet service..the cleaner...who cares how you look on Washington Street in Endicott..Now back to Guy Nichols in the WENE satellite broadcasting live at HiFi record and Tape in Johnson City"

Okay..I'm done..see you all at Muska's for a Jenny Cream and some gulumpkis?
