Getting DX on top of a local station

Have any of you gotten FM DX on top of a local station? I've only gotten FM DX over semi locals, but not locals. I know other people have gotten tropo and E-skip in the past on top of locals.

Back in the 80's, Houston's co-channel 101.1 KLOL used to make it into parts of the Metroplex covering up local WRR. I haven't been to Dallas or listened to KLOL in years so I couldn't tell you whether it happens anymore.

I received WEAW 1330 Evanston by nulling out WTRX 1330 Flint just three miles away. It was right at sunset in Evanston on sign off.

I don't ever remember getting any cochannel FMs within the predicted 70 dBu with a line of sight signal. 54 dBu predicted with a signal that is not line of site is easy. Just adjust the telescoping antenna on a good portable.

One time in 8 years. I caught WWDC (22.5kw, 99 miles) on top of local WDYL-FM (4kw, 8 miles), on 101.1 at the time. They are ~100° apart at my location, so I was able to aim the antenna away from the local. Still surprising...

Here in northern VA I once got WXGI 950 Richmond 3.9 kW by nulling DC area's 2.9 kW WCTN by experimenting with 2 Grundig AN-200 loops being 45 degrees from another.

I've gotten Detroit's 95.5 WKQI, 97.1 WXYT and 101.1 WRIF over local co-channel translators quite often. More often than not, I will get HD beacons from WKQI and WRIF while retaining a listenable signal (albeit with a serious het) on the locals.

I once experienced 50kw 91.3 WGTE Toledo, OH wiping out local class A WCKZ within 9 miles of the tower. I closed in to within 5 miles before all static and interference disappeared completely.

But the most impressive one for me has to be hearing 98.5 WINF Paris, IL briefly wiping out local 50kw WNWN completely, just 7 miles from the tower site. It helps that WINF is right in the null of WNWN, but still! I've never done anything like it since.

Earlier this summer I received 94.9 WUPZ mixing in and out with 94.9 WKZC, just 14 miles from my QTH. WUPZ is 167 miles away, but is almost opposite WKZC.

A few years ago, I remember getting 101.5 WJNR mixing with 101.5 WMTE (three miles away, when they were 6kW) one night. And they are almost opposite each other. This summer, with WMTE on a 250W STA, WJNR completely owned 101.5 on the same night that WUPZ mixed in and out with WKZC.

And before 106.3 WMXG went silent, they used to mix with 106.3 WKLA occasionally (WKLA is on the same tower as the aforementioned WKZC).

Semi-locals 96.7 WLXV, 102.7 WMOM, and 107.5 WCCW often get wiped out by WBDK, WRVM, and WDUZ respectively.

Just two days ago, 102.7 WMOM was wiped out by IBOC from 102.9 WHQG, 115 miles away.

Here in Tampa Bay, they brought back the old classic rock station called 'Thunder' with their main frequency on 100.7 HD2 (which you can't get with a regular FM radio) but they have two translator stations, one on 105.9 (Tampa) and one on 94.5 (Gulfport) that are 250 watts.

The one on 94.5 W233AV from Gulfport which comes in almost as strong here in Tampa will sometimes have WCFB Daytona Beach (transmitter between there and Orlando) competing with it at night and only a slight adjustment of the antenna can make either one come in clear all alone.

One June day a few years ago I was a in a local store that was playing local Froggy 97 over the speakers. I started hearing static and a CHR format mixing in. I thought somebody must be in the back messing with the radio. But I got near a speaker and kept listening and at the end of the CHR song that was mixing in I hear the words "Hot 97.5". I'm guessing this was KKCT I heard, there ended up being a really good opening to the Nebraska/Dakota area that day when I got home.

I've gotten WWBB 101.5 from Providence, RI right over my local NJ 101.5 8 miles away. Also gotten 103.3 Amp Radio from Boston over WPRB which broadcasts from the same tower as 101.5.

Speaking of New Jersey 101.5, I remember they used to also broadcast in the southern part of the state on 97.3 from Millville but they don't mention it anymore in their ID (I listen to them online from here in Florida), so I assume they no longer use that frequency anymore.

The last time I drove down to Florida from visiting Jersey was in 1999. I took a different route than the usual traffic filled I-95 and went on route 13 through Delaware and Maryland so I could drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel for the first time.

I was able to hear NJ 101.5 on their 97.3 frequency well down on the Delmarva peninsula.

I heard WHCN from Hartford on 105.9 in a certain spot over QXR, only 10 miles away, but 105.9 from New York is a lot weaker than the others. I believe its impossible for a distant station to overtake any of the other NYC locals, unless they are running lower power or off the air.
