Getting fed up with WALK's inconsistent tone at night

I am sick and tired of WALK jumping all around at night creating a goddamn jarring tone. Al Lewis played one of the greatest songs ever Eric Clapton Wonderful Tonight. Fine. Than he switched gears with the absolutely horrendous dance tune Hips Don't Lie. Okay so I figure they're going to do predominantly dance music tonight. Yet than afterwards they belt out another absolutely wonderful tearjerker Cher with After All. Only at night does WALK pull this freaking garbage. On every other daypart they generally try to keep a consistent tone. If you do a dance song you generally follow it with another dance song or at least an upbeat tune. It's ridiculous. Choose a tone for a set and follow it through. After Hips Don't Lie, Lewis should have played if not a dance tune something consistent with the upbeat tone of the song like Edge of Seventeen or Since U Been Gone. Jesus. I mean just now more freaking inconsistent tonality. First up is Bon Jovi Want to Make a Memory. Good choice. Than abruptbly shifting gears they cut to Blondie with Call Me. Go from soft to one of the loudest grittiest songs out there. Than they shift gears dramatically once again to Lifehouse You and Me. Compare that to WHUD which played 3 consistent in tone songs in a row. Earth Wind and Fire with After the Love Has Gone. Cheap Trick with The Flame. Plain White T's with Hey There Delilah.

Sounds like someone both here and the hudson valley board has a yeast infection tonite. Lighten-up . Pun Intended!!! ;D

Keep in mind...that Al Lewis isn't really there at WALK...it's all VT'ed...and you and all the other listners are fools, being totally deceived, if you think anyone is playing anything after the 7PM hour!!! Just the Automation on Auto-Pilot!!!

I've actually suspected that Lewis is not there and that there's no live DJ at WALK until midnight with Patrick Shea. I have a problem though with embracing that conclusion completely. During the weather reports Al Lewis intones " Right now it's such and such degrees on the great south bay." If the station is indeed automated until midnight and Pat Shea arriving, than how is it possible that they would be able to broadcast the exact temperature at the time of broadcast?

Temp probe, with a corresponding sound file. We do it on five of our stations in my cluster.

Okay that makes sense though I think it would make more sense to automate the overnight midnight to 5 rather than evenings. Bump the automation to midnight and just switch the jocks around. Tell Lewis that he will be programming the overnights, and have the current overnight DJ Patrick Shea arrive at the station at 7 rather than having him come in at midnight.

Hate to burst your bubble there LIRadio Fan, but WALK is automated from 7PM right thru till "The Breakfast Club", except for overnites on the weekends (last I checked). Only stations on the Island with anything consistent from 7pm-Midnite are WLNG and I believe (as I don't really listen to them) WBLI. Everything on LI is "dark", including all overnites everywhere east to west, Queens/Nassau line to Montauk! As far as I'm concerned this is pityful for a top 20 market...but look at the city. Alot, if not most, FM's in NYC are going VT'ed overnites! It's everywhere! Emmis in Chicago, of all places, just dumped overnites on 2 full signal city FM's just this week. Come on now...lets save that money!!!

Which of course in the case of Al Lewis and Patrick Shea being voicetracked doesn't make sense to me. Al Lewis has two daughters. It doesn't make sense to me that he would accept being paid less than KT Mills and Scott Miller. Plus this is not a case of John Tesh where he's automated on KJOY. If Lewis is indeed being paid a fee equal to Miller and Mills and they're not saving money, than it makes no sense to let him pre-tape his show instead of having him come to the station in person. I don't know about Lewis on the evening, but I know that in the case of Patrick Shea on the overnight it makes absolutely zero sense for him not to be there live. No way are they saving money in Shea's case when he is the assistant programming director for the station and as APD probably gets paid even more than the other on-air talent.

Dear Li Radio Fan,
Lewis is at the station everyday, from 9-5, at his full time responsibilty of production, last I checked. Shea VT's the station overnites to save money. They don't have to pay anyone for either of these shifts...it's all part of their regular salary/workload/responsibilities. It's nice that you're a fan...but if you're smart...and want to be in radio...learn to sell. It's the only way to continue to eat, and from the same dinnertable, in the same home, for any length of time...and the only avenue for advancement in this business. ALL...and in mean ALL GM's, higher-ups and bigwigs come from the same "mold"!!!
