Getting into "the business"

If you want to get into the busines, I salute you.

First, like everyone else has said, get a degree. Go to business or marketing but there's also a lot you can do with a communications degree besides broadcasting (public relations and the like). Get ready for lots of long hours, little money and unappreciation. However, if you stick it out, the potential rewards may be worth it (it's all in how you look at it). I got out of the business but you may put in five years or so and decide to stick it out. God knows broadcasting needs good young people to get in there and keep it alive. That said: Do not get caught up in the corporate disaster that has polluted media. It was that corporate crap that made me leave the business and, unfortunately, there are lots like me all over the world (about half of my "class" - guys who started around the same time I did - that I kept up with) have gotten out.

Like someone else also said, your mileage may vary. I really hope you're one of the lucky ones who can save radio before it implodes.

Good luck and God bless.

Jonathan
