Getting music service from the Labels

Help me understand this. I know most major terrestrial radio stations get direct service from the record labels to play their music. I also recall reading or hearing somewhere that if you run a fully legal/licensed internet station, the labels can also choose to provide music service to you as well.

I recently got setup with CDX a free service that sends you CDs full of current single releases (Country). I also am setup on dmds.com for similar service to download files. This is a good start but I wonder if any of you have had any success interfacing directly with labels to get music service. Or having the labels tell a service that your station is approved for their services. I also applied for PlayMPE, but they claim that they don't have their own channels for internet radio.

If you've worked things out please share your experiences and strategies with us.

Thank you!

Thanks, 50's!

I wanted to also inquire if anyone knows a good site that has a collection of Label Reps that I can reach out to.

Thanks!

Working with Indie labels via AirplayDirect and sites like ReverbNation are excellent ways to get your feet wet and as you gain experience and credibility with the Indie labels you will begin to see larger labels seeking you out etc...

Very few large label Reps are going to give most Internet Stations the time of day unless your name is Pandora or Last.FM it simply isn't good business for them, the return they get for time invested makes them pass 99.9% of the time...

I just wanted to bring an update to my progress here. I'm happy to say that through either direct mail or PlayMPE.com, I've gotten service from Curb Records, Universal (all their subs), Republic and several other majors. I also have cds mailed every couple weeks from CD-X. This has been wonderful. There are a few hold-outs that I have to keep trying to work with. But for the most part, I'm covered!

I was very surprised at the amount of support and friendliness.

Thanks.

Wow maybe the state of the record business has finally sunk in and made them realize their product doesn't sell if we don't spin it...

Most of the labels provide LMTTRR with service through PlayMPE. We'll get a few others through CRW/Westar, Airplay Direct and Radioactive Airplay. It seems the Christian labels like webcasters. We also have a few holdouts as well, though we rarely have to purchase the chart music outright anymore. Congrats on getting the labels to service you.
