GETTING VOTED OFF THE CLUSTER?

An article in today's "Tom Taylor on Radio" coulumn mentions the possibilty that Clear Channel could begin the process of "de-consolidation" as early as 2010, with other large group owners like Citadel probably following suit soon after.

Should that happen in our little corner of the world, what broadcast property do you think would get "voted off", and why?

Also...Who do you think would be the most likely candidate(s) to pick up the signal being disposed of?

Thoughts?...Speculations?...

Tough one. WHJJ, I think, is most likely. It could go to a church or foreign-language operator, brokered time (probably most likely) or on the off chance WJAR or WBRU would want to reunite it with either of those signals (as 920 was parent to both 95.5 & Channel 51, er, 10.1). In those scenarios, 920 could either be WJAR again & used to reinforce the news product of the TV side or to be used to put the jazz & urban/gospel programming on so 95.5 could be modern rock around the clock. However, I don't think Media General has any interest in operating an A.M. radio station. As for foreign language, I suspect there may be a hole for Portuguese language in Providence. The transmitter is on the east bay & booms into E.P., Warren, Bristol, Fall River, etc.. As for WHJJ's current lineup, it could end up on 790 & 790 could be the "national feed" counterpart to WPRO.

WHJY, I imagine, is safest of all. I don't think WSNE-FM would change as it's the only female-oriented station in the cluster. B is probably close to 50/50 male/female. By changing WSNE-FM to another format you'd be giving up to Citadel. B, I doubt any changes but I don't think it'll be returning to WLKW-FM any time soon! ;)

I don't see any changes happening within the next year because I think stations want to see if PPM numbers bring any major revelations as to who is really listening. Stations now considered to be underperforming may see total different numbers.

I used to think that there WAS a hole for Portuguese programming in Providence, but in the over 11 years that have passed since the demise of 1290 WRCP, I'm not so sure anymore.

I suppose another take on the Portuguese angle would be if Edmund Dinis were to get 920, use it as a place to park WJFD's format, and fulfill his dream of being able to use 97.3 for something else in English.
