getTV is now on DISH channel 373

From Business Wire:

getTV and Cine Sony Television Join DISH Lineup, DISH Renews Sony Movie Channel

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and DISH Network L.L.C. have completed long-term carriage agreements for three of SPT’s wholly-owned domestic networks: Sony Movie Channel, Cine Sony Television and getTV. The agreements include first-time nationwide distribution of classic TV channel getTV, the addition of Spanish-language Hollywood movie and entertainment network Cine Sony Television on DishLATINO, and continued distribution of the popular, contemporary, English-language network Sony Movie Channel.

How many more of the diginets can we expect to find their way, in one form or another, on satellite, major cable carriers and telcos? BHTV airs most of Laff while FETV airs COZI TV in the evenings.

I'm thinking this was a condition that came with being able to renew carriage of the Sony Movie Channel. I'm not sure the actual price tag, but Sony spent much acquiring CBS's variety show and specials library (Carol Burnet being the exception, she's always owned her own shows). And this is where all the classic Columbia Pictures have gone, so Sony wants the most exposure they can get for them.

Get TV is sort of a commercial TCM. If you're into older movies, mostly black and white, they're a good source. But you do have to put up with commercials, something Turner Classic Movies doesn't air.

But what I like about Get TV is that they also air the old Merv Griffin Show, a variety show similar to the Tonight Show, from the 60s and 70s. For a while Merv was on CBS late night, trying to compete with Johnny Carson. That didn't last too long. When CBS discontinued his late night show for low ratings against Carson, he took it into syndication where he remained for years. Most stations, especially network affiliates, ran it as a daytime show, often in late afternoon after the network game shows and soap operas were over. Some, like Independent WNEW-TV in NYC, used it as a prime time show, 8:30 to 10pm. Merv wasn't as funny as Carson but he was likable and earnest. Merv had a history as a band singer so he did a musical number every few days or would sing with some of his guests.

And I noticed that for the holidays, Get TV is also running a few old Christmas specials, from Andy Williams, from Perry Como and from Sonny & Cher. So I recorded them and I'm watching them a little at a time, fast forwarding through the commercials and segments I don't want to see.

In NYC, Get TV is a subchannel of WFUT 68, an UniMas station. Odd that a station owned by Spanish-language Univision would be running an English-language classic movies and TV shows channel. I guess Univision has the clout to tell Time Warner to run Get TV as a subchannel on its station line up. In Portland ME, Get TV is a subchannel of the local CBS affiliate, Sinclair-owned WGME 13.

GetTV has been running some good old Christmas music shows today.
As an "oldster" (is that a word?), I enjoyed seeing The Carpenters on The Perry Como Christmas Special from 1974.

I wonder if they are going to air Bing Crosby's final Christmas Special from 1977?
It was shot in England just days before he died. He performs a memorable if unusual
duet with.......David Bowie!
