Giants on My 9 WWOR TV

I am wondering why WWOR My 9 was able to run Giants Football. I thought this game was licensed to ESPN and that even though WWOR is owned by Fox that only Fox 5 can run NFL and can only run from their own network. How did Channel 9 get this game?

And it doesn't automatically go to Fox or CBS - any station can bid for the rights to the game, just like preseason.

In my market, an independent station has carried ESPN and NFL Network games recently when the local team is playing.

IMO, that's one of the many things the NFL does right compared to other sports - they haven't written off the OTA viewer. Having only 16 games in the season may be part of the reason why.

For the record: WWOR/9 has rights to games aired on ESPN, while WPIX/11 carries NFL Network games involving local teams. So you can see Giants games on Channel 11 if they were scheduled to play a game on NFL Network (e.g. last Thanksgiving in Denver).

Look at KPIX the CBS O&O in San Francisco they air Oakland Raiders San Francisco 49ers games that are produced by ESPN and NFL Network when the games land on a Monday night or Thursday night.
