Gib Shanley Passes Away

Longtime Cleveland Browns radio play-by-play announcer Gib Shanley passed away on Sunday (April 6) at the age of 76. Shanley broadcast the Browns games from 1961 through 1984 over three originating stations in Cleveland (WGAR, WERE, WHK) over those seasons as well as the Browns Radio Network. Shanley also served as the sports anchor for both WEWS, Channel 5 (1964-1984) and WUAB, Channel 43 (1988-1996). Born in Bellaire, Ohio in 1931, Shanley spent his early years in radio at several outlets in Ohio and Michigan. He was doing University of Toledo football and basketball games when he was hired to do the Browns' games on radio. Shanley was inducted to the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1991 and into the Associated Press Hall of Fame in 2006.

Very sad news indeed.

I remember Gib Shanley doing sports back in the day on WEWS Channel 5 in Cleveland. John Hambrick and Dave Patterson did the news, Don Webster did the weather and Gib handled sports. And we can't forget Dorothy Fuldheim! What memories from a former Ohio boy...

A lot of you forgot that Gib was on KYW-TV (now WKYC) before he went to WEWS. I fully agree with the previous posts, he will be truly missed.

Interesting that none of Gib's Bios at the time of his death mention his time at KYW-TV 3, though I recall seeing TV Guide listings from 1960-maybe early 1961 in which Gib was listed as a sportscaster at Channel 3
