Gil Gross Gets Pete Wilson's KGO Slot

In the closing minutes of his program today, Ronn Owens was joined by Jack Swanson, who announced that Gil Gross will be the permanent replacement for Pete Wilson on KGO/810 beginning on Monday, September 17.

Why did they hire a outsider for that gig?
They probably would get a bigger audience if they hired a talent from the Bay Area.
Bad move by Jack Swanson.
I am not going to listen to Gil Gross.

Who replaced Pete as the Channel 7 lead anchor?

Newsperson responds:

Gil Gross does not seem like an outsider at all. He has done many fill-in shifts at KGO. I had thought KGO was seaching for someone from outside the west.

Gil Gross knows and loves news, has an entertaining style on his newscast and I beleive that he will have a great following in the afternoon slot on KGO.

Now ABC radio networks will need another upbeat news anchor to replace him. Any ideas on who?

Bluebird: you're certainly enlightened, like some baby crying " I won't listen because that man is from out of town" Fact is KGO is lucky to have Gil Gross, like the late Pete Wilson he is a class act. In addition he is an outstanding interviewer & newsman. With provincial people like you, no wonder the radio in this town is so boring & lackluster.

Keep in mind Gil Gross has a tremendous background in news, from his days
on WABC(when it was a music station)to filling in for Paul Harvey, which i hope
he will continue to do.

Gil Gross has been listed as a fill-in host on KGO's website for years. You didn't know because you had to scroll all most to the bottom to find him listed there! He will be fine in the afternoon slot.

I think Gill is a great choice. His ABC newscasts always stood out, and he's been smart and entertaining as a fill-in talk host on KGO. Though I guess he may never have actually lived in the Bay Area, I wouldn't consider him an "outsider" at all.

When does Dan Ashley rest? Isn't he now co-anchor on the 5:00 and 6:00 newscasts, and sole anchor at 9:00 (Your TV20 and KGO-DT), and 11:00?

Yep...Gil Gross is a good hire. Solid all the way around. Be interesting to see if he can be as engaging as Pete was.

I agree, Gil will fit in perfectly.

Or Terry Gross...Or Grosse Pointe MI
He is the favorite choice of KGO staffers. A very good hire. An excellent broadcaster. A nice guy...
And he's gonna need a new matress, so Sleep Train will be thrilled ! ;)

Gil Gross does some excellent writing for his ABC-I 'casts and the
talkmeister gain for those in the Bay Area will be a loss for TOH
news listeners everywhere, especially as he's been doing PM drive
on the left coast.

Unless...(touches chin as camera defocuses a la Dave)...

Gil:
"...I'll be back tomorrow at two, and I'm next. Figure that one
out. Fair and cool tonight, 64 now in Oakland, 66 in San Jose,
in the city it's 63 and on your radio it's 81...KGO San Francisco,
four o'clock...(ABC-I sounder)...From ABC News, I'm Gil Gross..."

...(camera refocuses)...Nah, never happen.

Yes, I know they don't toss to the network that way anymore
but the "old way" was so much more simple and elegant. :)

Henry tautatbaum SP? is a great talk show host!!!!!!! Hire him for Sundays 4PM-7PM. Is a perminate sub?

I was kinda hoping that John Rothman would get the 2-4 slot, but Gil Gross will do just fine. He's relocating to the bay area so while he may not be a 'local' right now, it won't take him long to get used to how things go around here. I'm also glad they're not moving Gene Burns to that slot; he was filling in for the late Pete Wilson for so long that I thought he'd just inherit it.

Overall a good move by KGO, given the tragic circumstances.

Quote from Mike:
"I was kinda hoping that John Rothman would get the 2-4 slot,"

It would be nice to see Rothmann get more air time at KGO, many have called the program and suggested John every day.

In a recent KGO listener survey sent to members of the listener club, they asked listeners if they wanted all news in the afternoons 4p-7p, or, talk.

Maybe they could just have two newscasts/hour from 4p-7p, and move Rothmann to afternoons 2p-4p, and Gil Gross 4p-7p.

And, then there's the Bay Area's Peter B. Collins, who is syndicated 3P-6P Pacific, but doesn't have a home yet. KGO would be perfect for Peter B.

For John to go on weekdays creates a major problem, it eliminates the Skywave broadcasts on weekends, so regular callers who stay up for all those nightime hours
would be upset.

While on the subject of weekday shows, Bob Brinker could get one now that he does more politics and has interviews with guests on the environment and lifestyle topics. =albuquerquetom

Newsperson responds:

KGO does not like syndicated programing and only clears programs that it has a connection with. Bob Brinker and Dr. Dean both started their shows at KGO and Leo Laport on computers previously worked at KGO.

If they did drop news in afternoon drive (which would be a mistake) in favor of a talk show, it would certainally be local.

Do you know if KGO is seriously considering such a major change in afternoon drive?

Newsperson

"They are not."

It's interesting that people like to talk about changes at KGO and KOIT, probably because they both have new owners. But both only ever change at a glacial pace, usually due to circumstances beyond the station's control, such as Pete Wilson's untimely death. Though it's now a cliche, the phrase "if it ain't broke..." certainly applies.

I would also like to hear Rothman more often. My other wish would be a different male morning news anchor, because Ed Baxter's lack of uh....um...heh, heh, heh...er, um...you know, uh...articulateness makes me want to kick my radio in. But popular is popular.

From Newsperson: "Do you know if KGO is seriously considering such a major change in afternoon drive?"

I would certainly hope not. The afternoon news is far too important, given all the people who are driving at that time and need the traffic reports, etc. Chaging that would send a ton of listeners over to KCBS for sure, and least in that slot.

I'm happy to hear Gene Burns back on at 7pm. Listening to his monologue yesterday, it seems he did not care too much for the 2-4pm slot anyways.

And as for John Rothman, I would very much like to hear him more often and mentioned that in the KGO survey, even if it means sacrificing him in his current overnight slot. I suppose it's moot right now, but perhaps the next time a change needs to be made (and hopefully under less tragic circumstances), Rothman's name will be at the top of the list.
