KGO-AM - GIL GROSS weekdays 2P-4P to replace host Pete Wilson who tragically passed away during surgery a month ago:

from the KGO listener club -

Dear Mr:

We're delighted to announce that starting September 17, award-winning ABC Radio journalist Gil Gross will be joining KGO AM 810 in the 2-4 p.m. slot on weekday afternoons. His broad knowledge of local, national and international issues makes Gil a perfect addition to our all-star talk lineup. (Get the full story here.)

Gil's no stranger to KGO listeners; he's been a fill-in talk show host for several years and is Paul Harvey's chief substitute at ABC. His distinguished broadcast career began when, at the age of 23, he became the youngest anchorman in history on network newscasts from the ABC Chicago Bureau, while also anchoring at WLS Radio. In subsequent years he has been recognized for outstanding reporting on international stories including the attempted assassination of the Pope and the Intifada in Jerusalem. Gross has recently anchored ABC Radio News coverage of 9-11, the execution of Timothy McVeigh and the war with Iraq.

We're very pleased to welcome Gil to KGO - as operations manager Jack Swanson put it, "Gil has appeared on KGO so frequently during the past few years, it's not like a stranger joining us, but a respected friend. He is a rare and gifted talent, and I'm delighted that he's joining our amazing team of broadcasters."

As for Gil, he thinks he's going to like it here. "I am thrilled to be joining KGO Radio," he said. "It is still committed to local programming, making it almost unique - not just in this market, but in America. It is still committed to news, and it still has a stake in its community."

Gil is married to actress/singer Rhoda Bodzin; they have a son, Spencer Darrow Gross. They'll be relocating to the Bay Area in the near future.

Welcome Gil and family!

Mickey Luckoff
KGO President and General Manager

Gil might just be the most geniune big-name talent I've ever had the pleasure to meet over the years. He'll be missed on ABC News, but a great addition to KGO. This is why they are #1 in SF -- always.

I'm guessing he's middle-of-the-road politically?

Yes, in the Bay Area political paradigm, he is definitely a moderate. I can't think of a better replacement for the late Pete Wilson than Gil. Since most of KGO's personalities are left of center, Gil's presence will definitely provide an anchor in the middle. Interestingly, both Wilson and Gil Gross have Midwest roots.

Best of all Gil is truly entertaining in just about any discussion. He seems like he really enjoys his work, and we enjoy listening.

Gil's a great host. I recall hearing his nationally syndicated show during the 1990s.

Like Bruce Williams did, Gil didn't force his opinions on his listeners. He had opinions, of course, but like Jim Bohanon, the show wasn't an opinion show.

It covered books, authors, top issues of the day, etc., fairly. Kind of like Larry King but without the attitude.

I called in once and got to ask the guest a question.

Gil is one of radio's class acts. I was on his show by phone as a reporter several years ago, when he did a morning show on KLAC in LA. His staff sent me flowers afterward. Geez, who treats you that nice in radio anymore?

Gill Gross is based in Los Angeles. In that Citadel owns both ABC News and KGO i would think that he'll do his show in San Francisco from Los Angeles. I wouldn't see him not continuing his work for ABC News for a 2 hour daily gig.
