at the end of January. No prizes for guessing who will replace him:
Deb Lawler.

Maybe so, but it's not an entitlement program. Far too many members of the electronic media (TV news/sports & radio) think theirs is a womb-to-the-tomb career. If Santos struggles with identifying players--his own team's, never mind the opponent's--and is error-prone with describing plays, then get someone in there who doesn't have those troubles. The media is full of talent who just hang on...and on...and on...for far too long.
 
Gil being forcibly removed? That would give me another reason to dislike CBS. Gil IS the Patriots. I'm not retarded, I can see the names and numbers on television myself. I don't need Gil to get them right.
 
I'd be willing to bet that if Gil retires you'll see Walt Perkins hired to do a split shift of morning and afternoon drive sports, something like 6-9 and 4-6. Then, they'll either have the newscasters read the sports during middays instead of afternoons or they'll have Walt record sportscasts for middays like Gil does now.
 
gil has never really been the problem...I've always found geno to be the one who's really lost a step or two the last few years
 
please, dear god, don't let Andy Gresh anywhere near that broadcast booth. Not really a Zolak fan, either. I could live with Tanguay but it'll be a sad day when Gil leaves. When I started following the Pats in 1970, he was there and there's something comforting that he's still around. Vin Scully still announces--without a partner--and still does a great job.

Isn't it the team that hires the announcers? CBS/WBCN may have some say in it, but I think the final decision is the Patriots'.
 
I hope they put together a quality broadcasting duo for Patriots games...none of this nonsense of 'giving' the plum assignment to a pair of Boston hacks who just feel it's their right--and their 'time'. I'd rather have good radio guys from afar than a couple local media hacks...who most people would despise and hate, anyway. Indeed, many of them make a cottage industry out of bashing the Pats because (I guess) being 'contrarian' is a way to earn one's stripes. Laughable how these leeches think.
 
I'm sure the Krafts have had a duo in mind for a while now. I'm surprised G&G have lasted this long. Not that they have been doing a poor job, but they have been fortunate (for several reasons) let's put it that way.

Would B.Kraft want the best he could get or just someone he feels comfortable giving the job to? John Rooke the stadium announcer is a talented play-by-play man who lost his BC gig to Meter' for apparently station political reasons. There are a box full of ex-Pats who'd love the color job. Maybe Bruschi if he retires?
 
Try this blockbuster duo on for size: "Now heres the voice of your New England Patriots Ted Serandis" (Ted): "Thanks Meter, we've got a fine day for football folks".

The suicide rate would rocket 1000% on that day.
 
It's more than likely a budget thing (no surprise) but it's better that Gil exit quietly like this rather than later and not on his own terms much like what NESN did to Ned Martin years ago with Red Sox broadcasts on NESN. Ned may have lost a step or three at the time, he wasn't ready to go, but NESN pulled his plug.
