Give me a BREAK!

I heard a promo tonight (the station shall remain nameless) that's such an out and out LIE. In the promo the perky sounding lady said she didn't listen to her iPod and the soft jazz channel piped in by her cable company. She listens to radio because she wants to remain "connected" hear her favorite personalities and know what's going on in the world. Oh and there are all these great HD-2 channels giving her even more choices! This promo aired on Saturday evening and I sure didn't hear a personality (or even a person) on in that time period. Does the general public really believe this drivel? ::) Maybe they just don't care...

Mike, if today's corporate owner's are ignorant enough to program stations the way they are, why should we, or other listeners, be surprised that they would put such unbelievable "drivel" on the air?  It's all part of the charade of trying to make listeners believe that their stations are something that they no longer are - while cutting expenses to the bone and driving up their stock prices!

By now, I think the expectations for radio are so low that most people don't even think of it being able to do anything they promised....

Sadly I agree with both of you. There are a few stations that try to do a good job but others seem content to run a bare bones operation.

Ipods can do something radio can never do. Play EXACTLY what a listener wants to hear, when they want to hear it. That will never be our strength.

The connection to a human being...a "friend on the other end", and the ability to SURPRISE listeners, and be involved in, and a positive force for, our communities...THOSE ARE OUR STRENGTHS! We forget that at our own peril.

Speaking just of the element of surprise for a moment...the one thing no one will ever be when listening to their own selections on their own mp3 players is SURPRISED! We have the ability to evoke "wows", by playing, and by being, something totally unexpected. We must never forget that!

In my not such a big deal career I always liked making that connection with the listener. I'm not big in the ego department, I just enjoy making friends and being a small part of their lives. Most of the people were very nice and I enjoyed occasionally playing a request or dedication when I could.

As for not being surprised at one's own iPod. Mine on shuffle would shock me and most others!

Yours on shuffle, Mike, will only play YOUR songs. That was my point.

As for the rest of it, I think we're on the same page. A "friend on the other end" is what a great personality comes to be to his or her listeners!

Oh I fully understand....but I have a very broad taste in music. There is so much music on my iPod I tend to lose track of it. On shuffle train wrecks would be frequent. :D

;D ;D What's an IPOD?? Sounds like something off of Star Trek? Or is it something like an 8 Track?? BIGAPE
