GIVE SAN ANTONIO AND AUSTIN THEIR OWN BOARDS?

Is there a particular reason that the San Antonio and Austin markets are combined on this message board? I mean, outside of "it's always been that way"? No stations overlap both markets viably. Just seems to me that each town deserves its own discussion. What topics or issues besides physical proximity bind the two cities together?

Because there would be a neverending custody battle over the kids, Luling and San Marcos. Why would you ever break up such a happy marriage? ;D

I agree with ya' 100% MozeMan -- there are plenty of stations in each market to justify separate boards. I have sent e-mails to the bosses here at radiodiscussions.com over the past couple of years suggesting that the SA and Austin boards be split, but nothing has changed. Now that they're under new ownership, I hope they will consider it.

I agree, it's more than time for this to be split into two. Especially since sometimes folks start topics with station frequencies and that can be confusing. For instance, I saw the topic 'KMLO 98.9 off the air' and I thought hmm, I hadn't heard they'd changed the call sign on 98.9 to KMLO :)...

Ummm....only as far as KLRN was concerned, I think, Fred? I remember in the 60s, KLRN was situated so that it served neither market very well, with a stick somewhere near New Braunfels.

Pretty tenuous.
I have nothing against my San Antonio brothers and sisters, but I still think both discussions would be more compelling and easier to follow for their audiences if held within their own forums.

Oh, yea, good luck with that one. Unavailable on cable, satellite, and only OTA if you have an outdoor antenna pointed west, set up exclusively for that station. Yep...big audience for that "Austin" station! ;D

While I'm completely on board with what you say, I wonder if we have enough traffic to justify it? Is there another similar pairing here?

I'm the minority on this one. It just seems pointless to me. Could each board separately hold its own considering there are days that go by with nothing posted concerning either market on the combined board? Then there are the stations in between like Fredericksburg, and San Marcos. Which board do those stations get posted information in?

It's much ado about nothing to me. It'd be like telling those that post threads about Beaumont stations in the Houston /Galveston board to take it to the Texas board where it belongs. Why? Much like Houston and Beaumont, while we may not share a rated market, we do share quite a few listenable signals with each other just like S.A. & Austin do. I would be surprised if the admins decide to split you guys up. I just don't believe the amount of traffic on either split board would justify it.

What about KBPA 103.5? My gosh that thing is a monster. They are all over the West side of Houston when I drive around. I would think SA would be covered by it.

I never found the previous management of this board to be very receptive to suggestions or reports. It was very much operated with a philosophy of "we like it this way and have no interest in your way." I reached a point a few years back, where I decided trying to help them was a waste of time and effort.

I think that splitting the two cities up might increase traffic. I know that I get bored filtering through all the San Antonio posts to get to the Austin related ones. I think there might be more participation by us Austin folks if we had our own board to post to. Austin will have less because its a smaller market but not that much less. I say let's do it.

The San Antonio/Austin board isn't the only one with shared markets. The Eastern Tennessee board shares three seperate markets (Knoxville, Chattanooga, & Tri-Cities market of Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol). All of these markets have about 100 miles separation and don't share signals. My guess is certain markets are combined not just because of proximity, but to save space and avoid boards that go for weeks with very little activity. I can see both sides, but it's really not that hard to tell the posts apart to me and simply read the ones I want. So I guess to me, I'm fine either way.
