Glenn Beck to KRLA 870AM

nmoore: Why would you assume I haven't "followed up" on it? I'll admit I've only heard Beck's radio show once or twice - he hasn't had a consistent radio home here in the Bay Area. But I've watched his Fox News program often. He's a very smart person who is incredibly articulate, and very entertaining. I'don't consider myself a by-the-numbers liberal by any means - I hold both liberal and conservative views on different issues.

But many of Beck's opinions are way out in right field, and it's often hard to take him seriously. Limbaugh may bloviate, but his views are more mainstream conservative, and his trains of thought track more logically than Glenn's, who goes seriously off the rails from time to time. If I had time to do a little internet research to provide a few Beck-isms to illustrate my point, I would. Maybe later...

I apologize for jumping into this quote-fest. In this day and time it is a good move in many communities to add Beck to your line-up for ratings and sales. My opinion of the man is that he uses the emotion of fear to generate revenue for himself. I think that he is an absolute loon and I would not be surprised if he were to start a community in the jungles of South America named Becktown ...........red, white and blue kook aid on tap.

I hope you all have a safe and happy Independence Day!

And to you Stewy as well as all others.

You could well be correct about the Becktown but I might add that Limbaugh and his "ditto heads" could well be next door in Ditto City. God, how I would hate to encounter Savageville!

Glenn and his talk mates may well be making a fortune off their efforts but which is better for our nation, a guy promoting and profiting his agenda on the radio (or TV) that we can turn off or one in the White House? Think about it no one has ever, in my lifetime, left that office poorer than when they went in.

Happy Fourth to ALL!!

Aren't you jumping the gun? Obama has more than half of his 4 year term left. And I know we Americans all have short memories, but for your "left that office poorer than when they went in" category, I'd nominate the last guy... George W...uh...Somethingorother.

As for talk-hosts - don't waste time thinking that Beck is actually mentally unbalanced, or Rush is a pompous blow-hard in real life. Talk show hosts are performers...they are ACTORS, and their radio personas are their starring roles. If they stop being outrageous on-air, people stop listening, and their income goes down.

I very rarely have watched Glenn Beck on television or even heard him on the radio much since I've had only poor reception of station signals carrying his show. The business about the flawed Senator McCarthy is of interest to me in that I consider it a marker of how slowly indoctrination is unwound once it's set in. Anyone who's bothered to read accounts based on the KGB files made available in the mid-1990's would know that only a minority of the people McCarthy "smeared" were NOT rightly implicated somehow in contacts with or actual espionage for the Soviet Union. Yet his principle image as an evil opportunist persists, in spite of the numerous books written explaining the situation McCarthy found himself in. Roosevelt and Truman's administrations were populated by a great many leftists--many of them radical and some spies. This is the record now known. It is also ignored since "McCarthyism" still proves to be worthwhile agitprop for the left. Those who wish to inform themselves will read about this and those who wish their preconceptions undisturbed will not. I don't recommend any particular book but an Amazon search will reveal a great many--some of which are available in local libraries. Maybe Beck is trying to draw attention to the injustice done McCarthy--whose faults obscured his value for many. He appears to be a man who was not without redeeming qualities--if the KGB can be believed regarding who their spies and collaborators were.

I have read two of the books you elude to and it makes it clear that communists were an easy boogeyman in the day, even though they had a registered political party in the US. It is still not clear whether it was the pluralism of ideas that bothered McCarthy, or whether this was an easy way to make a name for himself and rise in the political ranks. The other side had a clear issue with it being demanded that they rat out others in order to be spared being blacklisted. Some brilliant people like Ring Lardner never had their names cleared before they died.
But back to the issue of this board which is radio. I think KRLA is doing a smart thing by getting Beck. The hard core devotees will produce numbers which in turn will produce revenue. I subscribe that his antics like his crying, or that God is speaking to him abuot creating a plan for the country which cannot be revealed until August, or his calling the president of the US a racist is all schtick...but it means ratings for him.

So it's been announced that, rather than canning that hack Mike Gallagher altogether, KRLA is actually rearranging their entire schedule so they can keep Gallagher. Prager and Medved stay the same, but now Hugh Hewitt (another hack who should have been dumped long ago) will only be on 3PM-5PM. 5PM-8PM is where they move Gallagher, moving Dennis Miller to 8PM-11PM and Kevin James to 12AM-3AM. What about 11PM to midnight, you say? Hugh Hewitt returns for another hour! It's brilliant! All so they wouldn't have to fire a conservative drone who sounds like so many other conservative drones. Genius move!

Don't get me wrong, hiring Beck was a great move, and it would have been perfect if that's all they had done.

Does seem kind of odd, huh? Well, maybe there will be some sense to make of it in the fullness of time.
