Glenn Goofner gone (new Marlins announcer)

I'm sure the folks at http://www.38cliches.com will love this news: via a post on boston-radio-interest,
Glenn Geffner has left the Sox broadcast booth to be the #2 announcer for the Florida Marlins.
(K. Vahey adds that Trup was considered for the Marlin post...) So it'll be Castig & O'Brien now.

Never again will we have to hear "and the run scores, and the Red Sox are back to within
3 to 2" (?!?!?)

i like glenn. i think he did a good job. sure, he was a bit rusty, but with time i think he will be an excellent announcer.

i cant believe so many criticize geffner's voice. i mean, really. joe castiglione doesnt exactly have a great voice himself.

Geffner sounded like he was out of his league. Sounded very minor-league. I'm sure he's a nice guy, and good luck to him and the Red Sox.

well, the Marlins are basically a minor league team so it's a good fit for him.

Is Dave O'Brien going to be doing it full-time now or will they have another guy to rotate with him? Please, dear god, not Meter!

You know, there is a new sales guru at "Jammin 94.5" whose humble radio beginnings originated in the Green Mountain State. This person used to provide color commentary with Vermont's best sports play-by-play announcer, Jack Healey, and in comparison, does a way better "Glenn Geffner" style for real, than Glenn Geffner himself.. The real deal !! ;)

There are lot's of qualified guys who want MLB jobs (sorry Troup didn't get one). GG has got hired twice now so he must have something going for him other than the pipes.

Didn't this Red Sox ownership group once own the Marlins? That could play a part in this, perhaps.

2 other sportscasters who came out of Vermont: Bob Lobel (WJOY) and IIRC the late Tom
Cheek (former Blue Jays announcer). WJOY used to have a clip of Lobel on the air on their site.
maybe still does

no prob on the link

I agree with SonicAl. If I ever hear Meter's voice on a Red Sox broadcast I'll become a Yankee fan. He had me rooting against B.C. this year. I don't think the fandom would put up with it. A lot more people listen to the Sox than B.C. and virtually every one I know hates Meter. As a matter of fact, I've never heard anyone say anything good about Meter, with the exception of the ass-kissing Larry Johnson.

two world series championships in the past 10 years.

the same number as a certain team from the northeast.

Only one of them actually has people listen to their game, however.

I remember reading somewhere that ratings for Marlins games are actually decent and that nobody goes to the games because the stadium is terrible for baseball and it rains just about every night during the summer. That's the thinking behind the persistent push for a new stadium and the way the team's various owners have consistently decided to cut payroll and stay in Miami rather than look for a better market; Miami is that better market -- it just needs a better venue for baseball.

Glen Geffner was knowledgable, but as pointed out above, he sounded like a minor-league announcer - and not necessarily even AAA. Is Joe Castiglione's voice better? No. It's never been great. I was disappointed when Joe first started because he was such a come-down from his predecessor, Jon Miller. When your #1 guy sounds like Joe, your #2 guy should sound major league...like Dave O'Brien does. At least there was no discussion (as far as I know) about bringing back Jerry Trupiano, who needed to go.
