Glenn Ordway is out at WEEI

A seismic shakeup at sports radio station WEEI is apparently imminent, with longtime host Glenn Ordway being replaced on its afternoon drive program by Mike Salk, a Boston native who has co-hosted a program on 710 ESPN in Seattle since 2009.

Multiple industry sources have said that Salk, a Buckingham Brown and Nichols graduate with previous Boston radio experience at 1510 and the now-defunct ESPN 890, has been heavily pursued by WEEI to replace Ordway, a staple on the Boston sports radio scene since the '70s, and that he will accept the job.

Salk did not respond to a request for comment. It is uncertain when the change will take place.

According to sources, Ordway was called in for a meeting with program director Jason Wolfe Tuesday night to discuss the situation.

wow just saw that. Bruce at Boston Sports Media: "We knew big changes needed to be made at WEEI, but it's still a shocker to picture the station without Glenn Ordway."

I mentioned Ordway had his pay cut in half due to ratings, and they are said to be losing big $ on Sox (as said here by Fenway1912)

@bruceallen Ordway's biggest problem was he couldn't talk with callers or engage them in any way. All he could do was preach.

@bruceallen Firing him might be the only thing harder than listening to him...

@bruceallen I find the EEI drive time show so much more engaging and insightful than Felger and Mazz. Weird move. Mid-day axe coming next?

looking up when contract was last signed...

let's see a Sep 2007 Herald article said D&C were re-upped for 5 years
>>The morning-drive duo inked a five-year, eight-figure deal yesterday, sources said. Their contracts with the WEEI (850-AM) expired late last week.

Was it renewed?
OK from Boston Sports Media:

>>The problem WEEI faces, and they face it in both of their drivetime shows, is big contracts. Dennis and Callahan received contract extensions when the simulcast deal with NESN came through.

"...Mike Salk, a Boston native who has co-hosted a program on 710 ESPN in Seattle since 2009..."

I bet he's been sleepless in anticipating this opportunity.

How ironic is it that it was Ordway that forced Johnny Most out of the C's booth and Eddie Andleman out of WEEI. Now, it's one of his former co-hosts across the street that got him let go. Karma....

Ordway nudged Johnny out but remember, Johnny was pretty sick. IIRC he'd had bypass surgery before he officially retired.

Ordway is a pretty good interviewer. He may be a world-class jerk, based on some of what I've read over the years, but he's a good radio host. I liked him a lot better once they ditched Smerlas, et al.

That may be part of the problem. He may have hoped that Jason Wolfe would give him back Smerlas, DeOssie, and the old format, thinking that the format change was the reason for the ratings dip, and not competition from Sports Hub.

Glenn is saying bye bye Holley is listing off all the EEI people at the sports hub( ouch)

Frank from Gloucester-- pick up your phone and start dialing-

Maybe he can do a late night show on 850 with Sheppard...Two Big Sexy's After Dark....

So is Mike Salk any good? I never heard of him. I certainly hope he's a better choice than Kevin Winter. I wonder if they'll change the name of the show and the format.

It would seem that there is a mole at WEEI who is leaking things to Chad Finn. Two in one week. Holley and Ordway don't seem too happy about it.

The Holley/Ordway combo has just never worked. I wish they had offered Ordway a demotion to mid-day and dumped Muttnansky.

I guess we can expect a lot of schadenfreude from the usual suspects. I wonder if Felger will take the high road. Ordway gave him his shot.
