Global Tuners

I began using Global Tuners recently. My main interest has always been MW DX. I've been trying to receive The US in Europe.
So far no luck. I've tried for several of the Boston 50KWs beaming into the Atlantic & even a few NYC stations on the UK receivers figuring that would give me my best chance.
Has anyone had any success trying this and if so which are the best European receivers to use to capture US stations?

I used DX Tuners...now Global Tuners....about five years ago. Receiver was in southwestern England, and I was able to pick up a few of the east coast blowtorches....most notably WCBS and WBBR if memory serves.

I played around with several other European receivers....particularly one in southern Sweden. But with these I was mostly interested in Europe DX. Overall, I didn't spend a lot of time with it. I've thought about giving this another try, but so far, I haven't.

Cyberdad,

Do you remember the best times for hearing the US stations? (CST)

Well I tried a tuner in southwest England, but was not able to snag any US stations. Even though I did hear WCBS when I was in the UK over 30 years ago tonight all I heard on 880 was BBC Wales. Heard hets on 1130 & 1510 which could've been WBBR & Boston on 1510, but not able to confirm anything.

I just recently discovered global tuners. great site. no luck with US AM's in Europe yet.

I had a little better luck tonight as I heard WCBS very briefly on one of the UK tuners. The problem is the 880 in Wales. So I tuned down
a little to about 878 & heard CBS on a very short fade up. The problem seems to be at least partly caused by the fact that these tuners mostly use omnidirectional antennas. Sure would like to find one with a nice longwire aimed toward North America.

I've said it here before but I'll say it again.
The Best Tuner on Global Tuners is the Atlantic DX, which is 500 feet from the shore with a longwire pointed right at North America.

I just noticed that Atlantic DX is down until further notice for repairs. :'(

Actually....the description sounds like the one I was using a little over four years ago. Hopefully they'll get it back up and running.

Does anyone know if there are any ex-band stations in Europe? I was using a UK Global tuner tonight & detected signals on 1650 & 1660.
The signals were too weak for me to identify anything, but the 1650 sounded like North American English.

I dont think Europe uses anything above 1600 or 1620, but I could be wrong.
they use 9khz spacing so it would be 1649 and 1658.

Thanks. I sure wish that Atlantic DX receiver would get back online.

There are many full-time pirates in Europe scattered above 1611 khz, some using 5kw (and possibly higher) medium wave transmitters. This blog covers the European pirate radio scene nicely:

That is probably what I was hearing.

Playing around with Global Tuners and am picking up that semi-local pest (for me), WWKB 1520 Buffalo NY, underneath Saudi, from the other side of 'the pond' (Cumbria Shortwave DX node). :)
