Globe, C. Simon: ESPN branches out on Boston Airwaves

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2005/09/22/espn_branches_out_on_boston_airwaves/

"What ESPN Boston brings, explains Tribou, is the national perspective -- with the help of ESPN commentators...Thus far, the only local programming is ''The Drive," with Mike Felger, 4-8 p.m. weekdays. Tribou says that the station will be adding additional Boston-based programming."

I'm guessing that the station can do OK with low overhead (syndie sports, and so far one local show). Prob. doesn't hurt that they're pretty close to 850 on the dial and when someone listens to WEEI and a topic they're not into comes up, or
when an ad break starts, people who start scanning the dial may land on them
and kinda stumble across them...

I find myself doing the same thing - when the Big O goes to his 15 minute commersial breaks - I usially switch to see what Felgie is talking about.

Felger has a good, listenable show - unfortunitly for him though - he'll never top the big-o in the ratings book (and he's admitted to that fact).

there's plenty of opportunity to scan the dial with those incessant breaks. When I was in Philly, WIP started at the top of the hour... host back on at 5:02... taking calls. What a difference... not as long breaks. I know it's about the advertising but it drives away listeners...

Don't be fooled. WIP also has long commercial breaks. It does spread them out a little better, though. And it doesn't break for an update at the top of the hour -- I'm sure that's a good way to keep listeners or bring more in.

Like when EEI starts talking about "Da Brooooins".
