Globe Sold for cheap--Radio BDC

http://www.*************/Big-Journalism/2013/08/03/New-york-times-sell-boston-globe-at-93-percent-loss

So... how will this affect Radio BDC? Does the new owner continue it?

I imagine a new owner will be looking at the balance sheets and if anything isn't making money it's gone.

Maybe.
As long as it is up and running, maybe JH uses it as a training ground for whatever future endeavors he has in mind.
Who knows what kind of tax write-off he gets.

Just a bit of out-of-the-box thinking......

How many acres of land/real estate are involved in the deal to buy The Boston Globe?

Is there any possibility that there would be enough land to house a future ball park for the Red Sox?

If so....just maybe this is the real motive in the Globe purchase....especially since Henry bought the paper "on the cheap".

Don't forget how agonizingly difficult it is for Boston sports franchises to get statiums/parks built. Remember the eternal hassles in getting the new Boston Garden built??....

Chances are...it would be a whole lot easier to relocate the Globe than the Red Sox!!

The Boston Globe headquarters on Morrissey Blvd in Boston is right next to Interstate 93. Access to a new stadium would probably be easy enough but can you imagine already hellish commutes compounded by thousands of fans coming in for a 7pm weeknight game?

The land the Globe sits on wouldn't be enough for a stadium. I don't know offhand what else is right around it.

Jen Brien should be all over the Globe topic tonight; they have much in common, one failure talking about another. Of course, that would be in between talking about the glories of her mother's visits and how "awesome" it is to talk to random people about their dogs after pulling off from Route 6A on the Cape.

No and I don't think you will see Henry move the RS unless the Fens land became so valuable that they decide to relocate a new Fenway at Great Woods or someplace with ample space and public transport access. I don't think you will ever see a stadium built in Boston. The Krafts wanted to and were told to get lost.

I can't see why anyone would want the Globe just for the paper though? When you think about it though TG could be situated anywhere and pay much less in property tax. So it doesn't make sense for Henry to keep it at Morrisey.

As for their radio possibilities I don't see it?

I'm a life long Yankee fan (I know, wrong board to profess this in) and the Sox fans would (rightfully) pitch a bitch if the Sox moved out of Fenway.

I would also if they moved out of Fenway. Have been there many times, it's an amazing, historic ballpark. Look what happened in the Bronx when one of those was torn down for a generic ballpark with no feeling the old place had.

I'm pretty sure the Globe plant is built atop a landfill or some form of former waste site. Redevelopment options are quite limited, if that's true.

As for space: the paper has a bunch of space that extends all the way into the edge of Savin Hill. It's much larger than the footprint Fenway sits on, and patching the Globe, 56/Chambers and Shaw's properties together would give you plenty of room, with a short walk from the Red Line and commuter rail, and right off the highway. And except for one side (Savin Hill), you're surrounded by either industrial property, park land, a highway, or schools (BC High/UMass-Boston), few residents to deal with. Ideal in a lot of ways, and you could get a waterfront view.

I don't ever see that happening, though. I doubt the Savin Hill residents would go for people walking out of the ballpark and pissing on their lawns.

Getting back to the topic of this thread, I think the new owner of the Globe may in fact continue Radio BDC.

On the other hand, I could see it's format changed from alternative rock to a Globe-centric news/talk format, much like the rival Herald is doing with it's online radio station.

The Globe property will certainly be redeveloped; it was built on the old model where they needed presses in the same building because they were printing two dailies, with several editions each, and the plates were cast in melted lead. Street sales, especially in-city, were vital and editions were timed to include more breaking news

Newspapers now make up the paper on computers and can send a signal to have a plate made anywhere on earth; readership is more subscription based, especially with the demise of the Evening Globe; getting the Wilson Tisdale trucks out for distribution to the suburbs is no easy task while a lot of papers have taken a page from radio and joined with competitiors at the printing end. Even The Globe prints the Herald, kind of the Needham towers applied to print.

The Globe building was built for the 1958 view of future production and distribution requirements; reuse of the land is a reflection of a modern technology and would not be a sign that the end is near. Real estate inevitably seeks its highest use.

The Globe still has the mothballed print platform in Billerica too, so moving the Boston presses would be possible without too much disruption.

Maybe if Mumbles gives him Morrissey Blvd he would move.
Otherwise his Fenway money printing operation is good.

Mumbles will be gone soon, and anyway Morrissey is a DCR road, not city.

If the owner of the paper also owns the Sox, would Radio BDC become Radio SOX?
