Globe: WEEI, 98.5 compete for sports audience

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/article...alk_victories/?comments=all&plckCurrentPage=7

Check out the many comments, incl. praise or criticism for hosts and signal strengths or
weaknesses. More than a few dislike political stuff in the mornings. Is WBZ-FM a younger poss.
more desirable demo? Will WEEI's listeners age out of desirable demos?

More than a few people wish EEI were on a strong FM in town, myself included. 93.7 the
obvious choice but they do OK in ratings and presumably billing with the low-cost Mike.

Sox are fading (at least in TV, radio ratings) and here come the Pats.

that's why I'm saying, WEEI should've put "Sporting News Radio" on overnights and weekends instead of ESPN. That's just my thought. Why, "Sporting News Radio"? Because it's more energetic and more attention grabbing. Like many people say on the "Sports" section of this site is that ESPN sounds dry. For me, I agree with that, because they have less callers, they don't have much interaction. The games sounds great. I'd just say, they should've put "Sporting News Radio" on there instead of ESPN.
Other than that, for me, WEEI is great. I listen to this one mostly (35 year old male) here

I mean, don't get me wrong, ESPN is ok. Daren Nokim is on late Saturday nights until 1am, his show is ok. I enjoy his show as well as V Show on weekend overnights, and Amy Lawrence who is usually on late Sunday nights.
I'm just saying without the interaction, it sounds too dry. You know what I'm saying. I still listen to them and like them, but I wish they had more interaction with listenners.
If they had better (News Update) Music like Sporting News Radio and Fox Sports Radio has, it'd be more entertaining. Maybe more upbeat.
Anyways, I do like WEEI much better, I listen to them more than I listen to 98.5. WEEI programs are very well produced

Based on this article and another by Chad Finn a couple of days ago, it's plain to see who the Globe is rooting for. One of the comments cited a quote from Bob Ryan that I'd forgotten about. He said that Felger had an "almost pathological hatred of the Globe". I remember that 'EEI used that clip as an intro when Felger was with them. It seems kind of funny that the Globe is strongly rooting for him now.

V Show on weekend overnights
He thinks he's doing overnight for FAN. Fortunate in his last name.

"almost pathological hatred of the Globe".
Doesn't everybody behind a Mic ?

I switch around a lot. The Merloni signing helped EEI and BigO. They're not stupid over at NewBalance so people probably like repulsion in the early AM. Me, I leave about 75% of the time.

Wait a second - you actually admit to liking Amy Lawrence on ESPN Radio? Because apparently, that is not the consensus on our sports radio forum...

Agreed that there is not as much listener interaction on ESPN Radio's air these days - then again, I guess that's why they've built their "SportsNation" to fill the void...

The show with the highest ratings (D&C) barely registers on this poll? I'd have to question either the poll or the ratings...........somethin' ain't right. It's also very curious that the highest vote getter of the six sports shows isn't really a sports show. I suspect some high falutin' computin' here.

Felger and Mass have been really good. Is there any shows not on the Hub or WEEI that could be considered? (What a difference a year can make)

Rating seem good to me. Gresh is near the bottom of the pile where he belongs along with the masters of old farts radio.

eei is sweating it. When have they ever had two A-listers (Neumy and Ryan) host the morning show for two straight weeks. They should have sent Meter packing for these two weeks. He brings nothing and is out of his league with N & R.

Ryan is definitely an A-loister. Neumy is a washed up has been. He's trying to hang on by copying Felger. He threw stuff at the wall for two weeks just to get reactions. He also gets a lot of facts wrong, which tells me he's faking it.

I think one person commented that EEI needs to get younger and that's absolutely correct. Their hosts are the old establishment. They need to find a way to inject some under 40 types on their airwaves. It's the only way to constantly stay in the demo.

People like Utility Lou Merloni may fit that category...WBZ-FM's music beds, etc., sound younger and hipper. Waiting for them to say "We're not your father's (grandfather's?) sports station"! :)

except on the weekends with Teddy Sarandis. Yeesh... I do love Trupiano's show, though, and it reminds me how much I miss him on the Sox radio broadcasts, even with the "way back... way backs." I like O'Brien but Rish is just so-so and let's not forget the trainwreck that Trupe was replaced with--Glen Geffner. Trupiano meshes well with Hardy. I like it better than any weekend show on WEEI and haven't heard Frank from Gloucester, which is always a plus.

I heard a lot of Mike Mutnansky on WEEI this weekend and liked what I heard.
He seems to have a frim grasp of the facts while doing post-game reporting
along with insightful commentary and analysis. A solid, non-flamboyant, show
host IMHO.

Muttnansky is good when he sticks to being a "solid, non-flamboyant, show host". He becomes insufferable when he tries to be funny and one of the cool guys. He's just not a funny person. Every time he tries to be one, it is really forced and definitely not funny.

This probably makes me a terrible person, but I really don't enjoy the annual radiothon. My life is depressing enough without all of those sad stories. Accordingly, I listened to T&R. I know that they and D&C are in the same time slot but I just don't see them attracting the same audience. T&R is a funny show with emphasis on comedy, funny bits, and wacky characters. D&C, while they veer into politics, is basically a sports show.

It's very obvious that T&R do not have sports backgrounds. They are clearly out of their element when they try to talk about sports. The callers seem to want to be in on the yuks, but even those who talk about sports don't seem very knowledgable. Take out the nut case, celebrity callers (which I wish 'EEI would do) and the rest of the callers are pretty well versed as far as their teams go.

I heard several callers make disparaging remarks about WEEI and they weren't bleeped. That surprised me. I've never heard even one mention of 98.5 on WEEI. It spounds like a one-way rivalry to me. It also seems like an apples and oranges comparison. I find it hard to believe that either show would take the other one's listeners. Were't T&R on another station for several years before this?

Also, the Gresh and Zolak show is beyond bad. Mustard and Johnson may be better.
