Globe: WGBH union tells members to reject contract offer

The largest union at WGBH recommended today that its members reject the Boston public broadcaster's final proposal for a new three-year contract. The Association of Employees of the Educational Foundation, Communications Workers of America, Local 1300, which represents 280 writers, editors, production workers and marketing employees, will complete voting on WGBH management's final offer on March 11.

And some really nasty commenters at the bottom, too. Yeesh. I take no stand one way or the other on this issue, since I have friends on both sides of the dispute...but there's a distinct and unnecessary lack of civility in most of those comments.

There is a general lack of civility everywhere you look! Have you watched Fox or MSNBC or any of the opinion shows lately?

But to be fair you cannot dismiss all of the people making comments below the article as haters. Some of the comments I read on boston.com contained truth. Not all but some read like they were coming from real people who are frustrated and have already suffered their own concessions due to the recession.

The WGBH vs. Union dispute is most definitely a sign of the times. In order to stay viable in bad times WGBH in all likelihood should examine their budgets from top to bottom for redundancy and waste starting with the executive suites and don’t neglect to examine the building and equipment expenditures.

Since the union local president Jordon Weinstein considers all things for a living, maybe he should consider one more thing, to be reasonable. It’s time for mutual sacrifice from both ends of the building.

As a financial contributor I will be watching with great interest.
