Globe: WRKO gets back to its roots

by Clea Simon

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2006/02/09/wrko_gets_back_to_local_roots/

WRKO is trying to be as local as possible; in addition to Taste of Boston
Tonight and Recovery Road, PD Brian Whittemore is hoping to do locally-based
shows on car repair, investments, etc. What about the best-ofs on weekends?
These "will be replaced by original, local consumer programming."<P ID="signature">______________

RKO did the car repair thing years ago and also did a program with Kim Commando on computer advice, none of it worked, it seems RKO is going backwards. Get rid of Whittemore, he's detrimental to RKO.

Clea Simon literally takes a press release or takes a lunch and then takes dictation. What sort of journalism is this? Theee Talk Station sounds awful these days and Ms. Simon just allows spin to replace the obvious, that the station is doing even more pay to play on the weekends.

Yes--nothing but brokered shows on weekends and their variations during the week.

The Brains and Cyndi Lauper were correct--Money does change everything.

Well, DePetro isn't bad (Entwistle case, etc.) then there's Rush or whomever
is filling in for him, then Howie...Stuff I like. Not into Celtics, Taste of
Boston, Savage, or Noory. Their ratings haven't been all that bad and give
them credit for going local. Would have preferred syndie Hannity or Hendrie
to local "Taste", though.

'RKO has Howie and he Celtics, both of which I listen to when I can. But nothing else that I've heard on that station does anything for me. I'm planning on taking a listen to the "recovery" show, just because I truly think that as a concept, that could really go somewhere.

Brian is doing what he feels is best, from both for listeners and (more importantly) the bottom line. I think once we see and hear what he comes out with in the fall, we'll be able to more adequateely praise him or slam him.

I just wish he (and other programmers) would realize that while pay-for-play might boost the wallet a bit, those shows are by and large just awful, and they drive away listeners. Recent exceptions to the rule include the late Norm Reisha's version of Calling All Sports.

...WHAT!

...THE FALL!..."we" listeners have our collective heads in the oven NOW!, by the fall you'll have a better chance of seeing Nancy Shack at the salad bar than have ANY listeners left! ;) See Ya!

Re: WRKO

WRKO-680 could really be in trouble after WKOX-1200's power increase.

At that time, 'KOX owner Clear Channel could decide to drop Air America and flip 'KOX to a talk format featuring shows from sister company Premiere Networks. And if they do, Rush Limbaugh may well get yanked from 'RKO and moved over to 'KOX.

Although Howie Carr's afternoon show is quite popular; should WRKO lose Rush, the station could have serious problems in early afternoon which could affect Carr's ratings.

If Rush went anywhere, it would be to Salem--there won't be a left/right hybrid on AM in this day and age.

If the future 50 kW WKOX transmitting from Newton drops Air America and goes with Limbaugh and other shows from CC-owned Premiere Networks, it wouldn't be a left/right hybrid. They would know that wouldn't work. It would go all right (wing) and compete with WRKO (and WTKK), perhaps leaving Air America on 1430 only.

That was purportedly what CC had originally intended to do with WKOX a half dozen or so years ago when they originally filed to upgrade the transmitter to Newton, however that was before Air America and various other left-wing programs existed. It seems a lot less likely that they would do that now, but who knows?

I believe sports was also in the cards for 1200, using programming from Fox Sports Radio.

But if 1200 stays with AAR, which it appears it will now do, one must consider what will happen to WXKS. The coverage areas will overlap entirely, so there will probably be a different format on 1430.

Re: WRKO

WRKO might be better off without Rush. They could put on a local host.

Rush is WRKO's highest rated and most profitable show. Entercom would never be so stupid as to pull the plug on this gravy train...

Right, but Rush is syndicated by Premiere Networks, which is owned by Clear Channel. If CC decided to pull Rush from WRKO to put him on one of their own stations, Entercom would have no choice in the matter.

Eli,
Though what you say is absolutely true, I was responding to the idea of Entercom pulling Rush in favor of a local host. Something that they would never voluntarily do.
