GM slaughter in Austin?

I've heard that the GMs at both KXAN and KEYE are out the door. Anyone know what happened? I know their May books weren't anything to shout about, but this does seem rather drastic.

Can't speak for KXAN, but the KEYE GM spot has been a revolving door for years. That station has never been able to produce any kind of an audience. The GM talent that has been through there has not been stellar to say the least.

KXAN, IMHO, has one of the better newscast in the market. Not alot of shock and hype, just decent reporting.

KEYE goes through a new GM every few months, or so it seems. The big surprise there is that the news director has held on for so long. He's spent a lot of money on stealing anchors from KVUE ... and they have nothing to show for it. In May sweeps, KEYE was still in 4th at 6 p.m. ... beaten by The Simpsons on Fox 7. The changes at KXAN were more of a surprise, although they're not as strong as they had been. Didn't win a single news timeslot in May. Their morning show is now 4th from 5-6 a.m. and third from 6-7 a.m. For a time, they were a strong No. 2 in the mornings, their 6 p.m. was No. 1 (barely) and their 10 p.m. was neck and neck with KVUE. KXAN also has some crappy syndicated shows, including Tony Danza. What's really suprising in both cases is that the trigger was pulled before sweeps had even ended. Guess Lin and CBS execs weren't willing to wait any longer.

As much as I root for KXAN (im a former employee), I always believe theres room for managment retooling, esp. after staying in the middle for the past several years. In addition, they deserve a move to a new studio complex. They've been in the same spot on MLK for over 40 + years and they really dont have the room to put in a new office, let alone build a new set. I think Mr. Hicks and LIN Broadcasting need to spend the cash and build them a state-of-the-art facility.

As far as the facility is concerned, I think you can say that for BOTH KXAN and KTBC as both are hemmed in by downtown locations. Yes, KEYE doesn't surprise anyone, I guess. However, I would think that one slumping news book wouldn't be enough to force out the KXAN GM. Perhaps there's something else going on?

KXAN was shopping for a new home to build its studios last year, but I've been told that the search was stopped. Right now they have some overflow offices in a building located across MLK from their main studios.

They need to get on the ball and build a new studio facility, man cannot live in the birdcage on MLK alone. Besides, they'll get a mint for that property in the resulting land sale.
