GMAZ Anchoring

They had Ian anchoring GMAZ this morning. Honestly, he needs more practice. He flubbed so many lines that it was distracting. Ian does a great job with weather, subbing on traffic, or doing the CBS Morning cut-ins at :25/:55, but he is not ready to anchor weekday GMAZ. Gray needs to find the new Javier Soto ASAP!

I have GMAZ playing in the background with the sound down, but will turn it up if I see something. Since Soto left, Gina Maravilla and Tess Rafols have been handling the 4:30 - 6 shift. When either Tess or Gina are off, Ian has been doing the news and weather. Was this the first time Ian has had to anchor the full 5.5 hour GMAZ? Agreed with Former, in that Ian is solid with doing the CBS cut-ins. Traffic is a little spotty. I'll say give Ian more reps/more time to anchor, if that's what he wants to do.

Also I am curious on a replacement for Soto. Anchor who can also do weather? Promote Gina to anchor and bring in new traffic technician? Keep as-is and bring in Kylee Cruz or Whitney Clark ready to fill in during the week, while using for short term fix?

Brian4, is it my Imagination or are the weekday 3/5 anchors only working 4 days per week? It seemed that they started this during the pandemic and are still doing it.

Yetta's FB page shared this announcement. New anchor/reporter coming to Arizona's Family.

Yes, Colton Shone is coming home to anchor at 3/5. I remember Colton from the radio and CBS 5 here in Phoenix. I'm excited about this hire.

Honesty, It's hard to tell. With summer vacations, I'm always surprised who shows up at 4:30 and 6

Colton Shone was on GMAZ today (August 4). He was out in the field talking with Mesa schools personnel. Later he anchored the Noon News with Nicole Crites.

Today could have been his first day, I'm not sure because Wednesday (Aug 3) my cable was having issues playing 3TV. The way Scott Pasmore and Olivia Fierro talked, it seemed to be his first day.

Question is will Colton be the full time morning field reporter? Gibby Parra has taken up most of the assignments. Or is Colton taking Javier Soto's place as the 4:30 - 6AM anchor?

He was on at noon with Susan Campbell either Monday or Tuesday, and then with Nicole after that. Today might have been his 1st day on GMAZ.

Thanks for the correction Derek. I work from home and have GMAZ and Noon News playing in the background. Not sure about Monday. Tuesday was a rare day I had to go into the office so I missed most of GMAZ and didn't see Noon. Wednesday was a cable issue.

Has Colton Shone been anchoring in the early am (4:30-6am on GMAZ? Interestingly, his agent posted that he was now the "midday" anchor and weekday reporter at 3/5. So, perhaps, he isn't exactly the Javier replacement.

Colton has been doing GMAZ reporter on the streets and in-studio segment reads. I don't think he's actually anchored on GMAZ. He has been a co-anchor with Nicole on Noon News. Interesting that, after several years of having one anchor (and a weatherperson), going with 2 anchors. Unless it's giving Colton reps with a co-anchor and have him eventually go solo. Nicole needs a break! She's been doing Noon, then from 4PM - 7PM, with some breaks. On Friday, she was on the 10PM news. That's a very long day!

I didn't watch the Friday noon show. However, I've noticed that *usually* when Nicole has to stay late, someone else co-anchors at Noon news (i.e. Susan, Kylee, etc.).

The continued 4 day work week really throws off tha anchor assignments at 3/5!!

Colton sat in for Scott this morning and did a great job! Considering they were handling breaking news in N Phoenix as well as a scheduled "Field Trip Friday -- Monday Style" at GCU, I could see Colton taking over the main anchor slot if/when Scott retires. He has a great voice and interacting well with Tess, April, and Gina.

That said, last night's 3TV news at 10 was a train wreck with Emma getting totally lost several times. Holly was doing double-duty and did a better job at news anchoring than Emma did. Are we really in a top 20 market???

Colton is a solid anchor and deserves a good permanent slot. The 10pm show was indeed a bit unpolished and painful to watch at times without the capable Michael Raimondi. Emma seems like a very sweet person and she's a decent reporter. But I just don't see her as more than an occasional fill-in anchor at this time, despite getting pushed to the forefront with the weekend evening spot and many prime weeknight fill-in opportunities. Whatever "it" is that Kim didn't have, Gray must think Emma has "it". Holly did OK but could stand to slow down a bit. You can tell that Colton and Michael got some valuable anchor seasoning elsewhere before moving up to PHX.

Colton did a great job again this morning. He voice is soothing in the morning. And Colton and Tess make a great team. I don't know if they are still looking for a Javier replacement or what. If so, they already have him.

So at 4:55 or 5:55AM, Ian Schwartz will introduce a short light news segment. Some of the time it's been features by CNN's Jeanne Moos. Ian mispronounces Jeanne's last name as "mooooos" rather than correctly saying "mooost" with the T being barely audible. I would think a producer would pull Ian aside and tell him. Or Ian actually listens to the segment!

Former CBS5 & ABC15 anchor Cary Pfeffer did the same thing! I had to look it up, I complained about it on this board back in December 2006 when Cary left ABC15.

Saw this, too, at 5:55am.
