GMAZ Expanding!

I saw a commercial noting that GMAZ will start airing from 4:30am to 10am soon. Another hour of Tara? Can we stand it??? ;D

When I saw you say "expanding" I thought you were refering to April (who announced her pregnancy a while back) and Carey Pena (GMAZ Weekends - who also just announced that she is expecting). Then again, they have to keep up with Fox-10 Mornings that runs till 10am.

FOX-10 Note: They just announced that in keeping up with the 3-TV's, two of their morning crew (Andrea and Alexis V) are with child.

AHA!!!! I thought I noticed a "protrusion" on the normally thin Andrea this very morning.

Congratulations to all the ladies (and proud spouses spouse's spices?).

Now, KTVK can once again say that they are "The Place With More Babies News"! :D

When does Fox 10 start their weekend morning newscast? They have to keep up with Tess' triplets!!

When does Fox 10 start their weekend morning newscast? They have to keep up with Tess' triplets!!

Let's compare for weekdays:

KTVK:
4:30-10am
11-11:30am
4:30-6:30pm
9pm-10pm
(+30 min Fridays - Varsity Zone)

7-10am Sat
8-10am Sun (only newscast in timeslot)
5-5:30pm Wknd
9-9:30pm Wknd
(+30 min Sunday Sports Show)

45 hrs, 30 mins

53 hours (31% of the week!)

KSAZ:
5-10am
12-12:30pm
5-6:30pm
9pm-10:30pm

5-6pm Wknd
9-10:30pm Wknd
(+30min Sunday SportsNight)

42 hrs, 30 min weekdays

48 hours (28% of the broadcast week)

We'll also do 5, 12, and 15 for comparison (just weekdays, 5 and 12 have event preemptions this weekend):

KPHO:

4:30-7am
12-12:30pm
5-6pm
6:30-7pm (only newscast in timeslot)
10-10:30pm

25 hrs weekday

KPNX:
5-7am
12-12:30pm
4:30-5pm (yes, I count Valley Dish)
5-5:30pm
6-6:30pm
10-10:30pm
(+30 min for Friday Night Fever)

23 hrs weekday

KNXV:
4:30-7am
4-4:30pm
5-5:30pm
6-6:30pm
10-10:30pm

22 hrs, 30 mins weekday

KNXV, a weak ABC affiliate, produces 22.5 hours of news in the work week. KTVK likely produced about 20 hours of news M-F during their ABC affiliation. Now they produce 45.5, more than doubling KNXV's news output. KPNX and KNXV's news output combined on weekdays equals that of KTVK alone, the news leader when it comes to how many hours of news (but their competition - err, competición - is pretty bad given they're #5). KSAZ produces a strong amount of news a week.

12 has really only made one change, adding local/news at 4:30, since their ratings epoch in the late 1990s. 22.5 hours weekday. And they were once #1 (but Leno has done a number on 12 at 10 - even 15 took 2nd above 12!).

KTVK, despite having the most news in Arizona, is the station I want to overhaul the most. Here's my idea for them:

CONCEPTUAL

4:30-10am
11-11:30am
4:30-5:30pm
6-7pm
9-10:30pm

47.5 hrs

Weekend:
7:30-10am
6pm-6:30pm
9-9:30pm
(+30 Sun Sports Show)

55 hrs (nearly a third of the broadcast week)

My KTVK ideas are crazy but I think are needed for them to keep going. Still, it's remarkable how much Belo puts into a #5 news department.

You say that KTVK is a "#5 station". I don't know how you come up with that figure. In Phoenix, all of the money is made in the mornings and early evenings. KTVK would be #1 or #2 in both ratings and demos in those time periods. Granted that their late night news ratings struggle but in the overall money making day, they are very strong. Just a thought.

What I think Raymie meant to say was that Channel 3 is the #5 station sign-on to sign-off (maybe #6 if you count Univision 33). From what I've seen, 3's news usually ranks # 3 or 4 in its time slots/dayparts compared to its competition (10 and 12 have caught up to them with their morning shows - and they used to be far and away the #1 show). 5 still has major problems in the morning despite finishing either # 1 or 2 much of the time at 10pm, and 15 isn't as much the underdog ABC station as they were a decade ago (they might have to thank Pat, Vanna, and Alex for that).

Also, 3 has a new half-hour dedicated to state politics every Sunday at 5:30pm. That should be counted as news programming. News must still make lots of money for them, in a time where their syndicated options are getting weaker.

Now, the question is, where is the Sales Department's lifestyle show going to run once this takes effect? My guess is the 11am-Noon slot where they currently have a half-hour of news and an infomercial scheduled.

My understanding is that Good Day Arizona will be cancelled. Lifestyles A to Z will run from 10am to 11am. Raymie, you can take 11am-11:30am on KTVK out of your news analysis.

And back to the original "expanding" subject.....and a confirmation:

I met the lovely, and very pregnant, Andrea Robinson this morning at the Phoenix Civic Center.

Edited KTVK:

4:30-10am
4:30-6:30pm
9pm-10pm
(+30 min Fridays - Varsity Zone)

43 hrs weekdays alone

7-10am Sat
8-10am Sun (only newscast in timeslot)
5-5:30pm Wknd
9-9:30pm Wknd
(+1 hr Sunday Sports Show and AZ Politics)

51 hrs total

Still more than any other station in the whole state.

Carey Pena is pregnant?! GREAT...just what the world needs - the offspring of a reporter & a defense attorney!!! :-\ What's the kid gonna be called, pain in the ass?

GMAZ Sunday also runs from 7-10am.

Did 12News officially cancel their Sunday morning newscast??? I know that sometimes it doesn't run when sports games start early. OTOH, I watched 12 News Saturday am edition and they put absolutely no resources into the newscast. Joe Dana did the whole thing by himself, no weather anchor, no reporter, no nothing! Why bother anymore?

GMAZ weekend is great!

GMAZ adding another hour? Yet another reason to watch Telemundo. To watch the best morning local programming in the morning, Ch 5 is the better NO Nonsense source of news, and topical info to get the valley going M - F before 7am. Tara Hitchcock is truly unbearable to watch. :-\

CBS 5 is bland and boring in the mornings. ABC 15's new team is bland and boring. Honestly, since the economy got bad and 3 couldn't sell all their time, GMAZ is actually doing news, weather, and lots of traffic! Although Tara is over the top at times, Kaley, Scott, April, and Gina do a great job.

Speaking of 3, they're doing a GREAT job of covering the storm. They haven't covered anything else between 4:30-6pm.

Meanwhile, between 4:30 and 5, Tram was busy mashing potatoes
over on Mc12.

Yeah, it's a new show-o-fluff, but today isn't the day for fluff. ::)

In other surprising news, 12 had more fluff than 3, pigs fly, and the world is to end soon.
