GMAZ Expanding!

I flipped around the major channels today with the following accolades:

Andrea Robinson did a great job reporting both the weather and traffic on the 10 Morning Show.

Chris Dunn did a radio-quality "big voice" job during the 5 newscasts and in the breaks later in the evening.

Most of the weather stories otherwise tended to be repetitious and underwhelming. I mean, how many times can the camera get a thrilling shot of water over running asphalt at an astounding depth of 1-2"?

To be fair, these stations cover all of the area from Phoenix Metro northward. While it was barely raining (but very windy) in Central Phoenix, I drove into a monsoon-like storm in the far North Valley with power outages (no lighting on I-17 North of Happy Valley). And, of course, the heavy snow and flooding further North.

I do think the situation merited extended coverage. I was surprised that nobody did continuous storm coverage all evening. For example, 3 TV could have done it on Cox channel 14 (at least hourly updates). 5, 12, and 15 didn't even keep their weather channels updated with local cut-ins (the cut-ins were from MID-AFTERNOON).

Also, wasn't this the time to call in all of your meteorologists to help out with team coverage???
 
formeraa, guess you weren't watching Grey's Anatomy last night on 15 at 8pm, where Tellus Bellis broke in 4 times with extended cut-ins. After the 2nd cut-in, the rocket surgeons at Ch. 15 decided not to return to Grey's Anatomy, which was about 15 mins. in...but instead opted to start Private Practice, which follows Grey's at 9pm. This played for about 7-8 mins. or so until I'm sure they were bombarded with calls.

Lots of cut-in's on 5 and 12 as well. Totally chopped up The Mentalist (wifey's favorite and source of a huge rant) and Leno's monologue (which I was trying to watch to ignore wifey's rants).
 
If you are going to cut in you either need to move the regularly scheduled show (i.e Grey's Anatomy) to another time or don't cut in at all. You could blow out some local commercial spots but in prime time, they aren't real plentiful. Doing this play a bit of the show... then cut in... then go back to the show just pisses off viewers. Either do programming or do news. Don't try to do both because you accomplish nothing.
 
5 did replace commercials prior to 7PM but after 7 they chopped the shows.

Maybe they were just testing their switchboards. ;D

I will point out that I did refer to "continuous coverage". I was thinking of constant, on-going coverage all evening, NOT annoying cut-ins which interrupt your favorite programs. I don't consider cut-ins and dropping a couple commercials as extended or continuous coverage. As I mentioned earlier, 3TV has Cox channel 3 that they could have used. In addition, why not use the weather subchannels -- they would be perfect for extended coverage??? 5, 12, and 15 could have done live news, weather, and traffic coverage!!!
 
And 10 had My 45, which they could have used if they needed to run coverage!

In fact, on Sunday they should have moved their 9pm news there to compensate for the lost hour due to Fox's extended primetime!

Nobody thinks in Arizona's news market. NOBODY!

I agree wholeheartedly. This was unofficially the fifth worst storm in Arizona history (according to the news media) and the coverage was poor. Of course, people wanted to see their favorite shows. BUT -- BREAKING NEWS -- THAT IS WHY THERE ARE WEATHER SUB-CHANNELS AND DEDICATED NEWS CHANNELS (like Cox 14)!

I give the Phoenix media a "C-" for storm coverage and I'm being generous because the meteorologists warned us days in advance that we were likely to have well over six inches of rain in parts of the Valley.
 
Getting back on subject, the programmers at 3 have no clue on how to schedule with a good flow, just pushing up Dr. Oz an hour, with Family Feud keeping its place at 12 Noon, followed by the rest of their female-skewing talk lineup. Couldn't they push the game shows back to 11 and then go all-talk from Noon until 4, creating more compatibility in their schedule? Nah, that would be too easy!
