GMAZ is #1

And then just today I heard a claim on KSAZ that their morning show was "the most popular".

Either way, is it interesting that if both are 1-2 respectively then the national morning shows aren't?

It probably depends on how everything is calculated...just a certain demo (e.g. women over 75)...average over the entire 4:30am to 10am timeframe or just a portion of it...who on earth knows what they're doing.

And since Gannett owns Channel 12 and the Arizona Republic, we haven't seen an article on ratings since 12 News was #1 in all the evening timeslots. Our only hope is that one of the stations releases ratings to the Phoenix Business Journal or something!

I find it highly amusing that it's still so important to be #1 in the traditional "sweeps" periods. Phoenix has been a Local People Meter market (year-round audience measurement of both households and demographics) for over 4 years. I get that the networks and local stations in non-LPM markets still put their best foot forward in the sweeps months (and the reasons why) - but why does the same occur for local stations in LPM markets?

If I were an advertiser, I would probably want lower rates for spots that run outside of sweeps periods - clearly it seems that there is more of an effort to drive eyeballs to the station in Feb/May/Nov (and July to a degree)....

In fact, KTVK is claiming to be #1 over all the time periods (GMAZ, GEAZ, 3TV News@9, and 3TV News@10). I couldn't quite see the fine print and I wasn't on the TV with the DVR so I couldn't watch it again. I'll try to read the fine print and report back.
