GMAZ Saturday Highest Rated Newscast in Phoenix

Tess Rafols announced this morning that GMAZ Saturday is the highest rated newscast in Phoenix. I assume she means "share of audience", not total households watching. Of all the people watching on Saturday am's, I guess that GMAZ gets a huge majority of the audience. After all, it couldn't be the lackluster snoozecast that 12 News puts together!!!

I think this is a great and I'm one of these people making this show #1. I think a big part of is Tess is a great anchor. She is enjoyable, pleasurable and just a great all around anchor. I feel like she really loves her job and enjoys working on the show. I know this has been said in the past but I appreciate the full staff 3TV has on the weekends and I just love that they invested in a weekend program. Great show and love watching. Happening to be watching it right now as we speak. Keep up the great work Tess & Co. your making the program great. Now if only they could do something about the weekday I might watch, but thanks for FOX 10 being so great too.

I agree that 3 outshines 12 on Saturday mornings but....most other (English) stations in this market are showing cartoons or infomercials so it's not like there is fierce competition.

It would be nice if they would drop the features and concentrate on real news.

No...it's the highest rated newscast in Phoenix. Beats M-F morning and night.

Again, in share of households watching television, right?

There are FAR fewer households watching television on Saturday morning than on, say, Wedensday night primetime.

Do you know that for a fact?

With all the kids out there in Valley-land I'll bet virtually every household with a curtain climber has the set on - and not to a news show.

If we're talking about English language non-LPTV stations there are only two news shows on Saturday AM.

If this is true, it's amazing that Channel 3 does it with the cheapest possible syndicated lead-ins they could find. I can imagine Valley viewers are watching Saturday Today over the little-known American Health Journal at 6:30am Saturday mornings.

Why would any working person get up on Saturday morning to watch a health show at 6:30AM?

That's a good question. No matter what Channel 3 puts in that lead-in slot (low-budget kids show, snake oil infomercial, test pattern), it seems to win that time slot because viewers are waiting for the news to come on. 3 airs a lot of weekend half-hour syndication that would have only been picked up by KUSK in Prescott a decade ago. I've got a feeling that 3's program director is a good friend of a lot of these mom-and-pop syndicators (I don't even understand why they would run a show like Ultimate Choice over Wild America or Animal Rescue to meet children's programming requirements).

When I'm up early, I watch Weekend Today from 6am to 7am. I'm surprised that, for such a large market, that Phoenix doesn't have more news on weekend mornings. GMAZ is the only reliable weekend am newscast. 12 cancels or shortens their shows almost every weekend This past Sunday, 12 News ended well before 10am.

It actually ended at 9am. I watch (DVR) 3TV on Saturdays and watch 12 News on Sundays. 12 News Sunday schedule is erratic; it can be 1 hour, 2 hours or not at all.

Lack of competition would prompt CH 3 to claim themselves the highest rated newscast. Tess is the ONLY reason to watch, she is a SOLID presence, and is worth watching. The OVERLY used Weather / Remotes are distracting at best. The Top & Bottom of the hour Newscasts are ok. But would you agree that the program is more lifestyle than actual news? When you add all the minutes devoted to Weather, and topical segments, then add up the minutes to ACTUAL News... The term "Newscast" is false... It's more your life A to Z with a sprinkling of news. STILL, Tess is the best talent on the weekend.

GMAZ is a very interesting concept. I agree that the weekend show has a lot of "lifestyle" content -- much of it paid content, I'm sure. Arguably, that seems to work for them in the ratings, since 12 News Weekend Today is hit or miss (never know if it's going to air or whether Joe Dana will just rehash old news for 2 hours). I personally find the weather remotes fun and add some "zip" to the show. In fact, I wish they had a second weekend reporter to do a remote at another event.

Interestingly, the weekday show is much more news-driven these days (at least before 8am when I watch). The paid segments seemed to have disappeared when the economy went bad and they got rid of Brad Perry.

There are "NO" paid segments on GMAZ. Either weekday or weekend.

When I say "paid", I mean either directly or indirectly (e.g. barter or free spots for buying other advertising or sponsorships or any other quid pro quo). Also, I certainly did say that there are far fewer in the down economy. However, certainly GMAZ has taken paid segments in the past (I actually read a statement to that extent somewhere in the press -- I will try to find the source.)
