GO JOE GO

There's a strong but subtle "buzz" about JOE going on. I'm hearing JOE in more and more places once reserved for FROGGY. Choice is a good thing - JOE sounds great, its out on the streets - good move. A few more classics wouldn't hurt - but other than that, JOE's on all day and all night at this old dj's shop.

Joe has a cool station vehicle and some nice equipment for remotes. You do see them out a lot...(cause they trade a lot), but I would not venture to guess that they will topple the Frog. There is a reason no one has taken on Froggy, at least that my opinion and were anyone to really take them head on, I feel it would have to be with a signal of substance.

In State College, Joe's signal is still too "iffy". I can tell you (honestly) I have heard the station fade in and out a little on South Atherton. When your station's signal does not even hit where your studios are, you have problems.

Not meaning to bash them...but honestly I think the old format stood a better chance of making an impact if it kept sounding like it was toward the end. That's the best I ever heard that station programmed.

I may eat my words...but I think there is only room for one King of the Country...and Froggy has that by a mile.

Strongest Signals in Zip Code 16801.

From: http://www.v-soft.com/ZipSignal/default.htm

Call Sign Signal in dBu mV/m Principal City State Frequency Facility ID
WJOWF1 100.0 100.21 State College PA 105.9 164854
WMAJ-N 96.8 68.79 STATE COLLEGE PA 1450 48923
WMAJ 96.8 68.79 STATE COLLEGE PA 1450 48923

WRSC-N 86.9 22.19 STATE COLLEGE PA 1390 64849
WRSC 86.2 20.48 STATE COLLEGE PA 1390 64849

Those numbers don't mean much. There are many places around town where 105.9 is unlistenable due to the signal overlap between the booster and the signal from the tower.

I also used your link and plugged in a bunch of zip codes. The numbers don't match what I hear coming out of my radio.

I'll name a few:

Toftrees
322 bypass near the stadium
322 near the shiloh road exit
26 out near Leitzingers

Those areas exist and are unavoidable when you have a signal originating from two sites transmitting on the same frequency.

Yes, you are correct. Synchronized FM stations still have occasional
mutual interference areas. But I believe your quote was "unlistenable".

Would you characterize the signal as "unlistenable" in all of those areas?

Just curious, of course.

Spack - I've followed your posts for quite some time, and I've always
been convinced that I know you - even though I don't have a clue as
to who you are. (Did that make sense?)

I say "unlistenable" because it just sounds so bad in some of those areas that I couldn't listen. In fact in around Toftrees in just goes away completely for a while. I'm going by the signal in my vehicle's radio.

I get what you're saying. There are people on here that I think I might know, but I don't know who they really are. Who knows, maybe we know each other.

Good info - I won't build my house on the Shiloh Road exit (lol).  I'm just saying it sounds good, I pick them up fine and I'm hearing it in more places.  Choice is great.  One JOE might not topple 1.5 froggys in the next year or ever..but there is something going on.

Hi there I'm new to the boards I've been talking to many people about JOE and most of them were froggy listeners and from what I was told by the people who listen to it was JOE will be making a dent in froggy. I do listen to JOE and Froggy both the one thing that JOE has that froggy doesn't Is a silly theme(THANK GOD FOR THAT) I like it when I tune into JOE and the weather report comes on I know it will it be a Foggy day in October not a Froggy day in Frogtober. To me that kind of redorick same like they are treating it listeners like they are in pre-school at least JOE sounds fresh and very active(I wonder id their Hiring. HA!) So i was a froggy listener now I'm a JOE Listener. So I really think JOE will make a dent in State College and Altoona

Multipath means that a booster just will not work, never has anywhere, ever. Harris broadcast attempted to solve the problem with a GPS based system, but in any area that the signal coming from both transmitters are close in strength you get the issue we hear. We live in the mountians and that means mulipath. 105.9 is a low grade signal from out of town the TX does not have alot of punch. It is directional and has a null pointed right at State College. The booster in theory is sound but in practice never has or never will work. They would be better off with a translater or to buy a real signal that reaches the area they want. In the FCCs ultimate wisdom they decided Port Matilda NEEDED a signal.

It's nice to see Steve Biddle starting a thread on this board! It's seems like more propaganda for Joe FM, much like the "opinion" article he wrote in State College The Magazine.

Opinion, propoganda for a friend - Same thing.

<pause> Waiting for official denial...

Before anyone gets too enamoured with Joe ( and I don't believe too many people are) please remember that this is the same management team who flipped the Buzz just before they earned some respectable numbers and were creating some street "buzz" of their own. Oddly enough, some of that "buzz" was created by their cool station vehicle, an old ambulance - the SAME ambulance used currently by Joe.

At a minimum, they could have re-painted it to match their current color scheme... I guess no body shops are doing trade with radio these days?

Duke

Oh, on a positive note, this board does provide a nice place for actual local feedback, unlike the Edtiorial page of the CDT.

Former Buzz employee, Duke?

Former Buzz employee, Duke?

Nope, but I have worked with many of those people in the past. Don't forget most of the former Buzz staff have worked at other places here in town before and after The Buzz.

Sales people as well as dj's move around quite a bit, and seem to perform the same at every radio station.

Some of those do a nice job, others, well, not so much.

DUKE

Duke is obviously a former BUZZ employee, maybe half of the former morning team? Where are they now anyway? Seems like if the jocks were "really" that talented they would have been picked up quickly by another radio group and not doddling around this site! I liked The Buzz too but I have to say that I admire what they've done with Joe. Joe is "unique" and doing a solid job. Clearly Joe is the first station to "TRULY" step up to the plate and go after the competition! Remember competition makes us all better! I'm not in radio anymore, reading some of these posts reminds me why I left. I never understood why radio has to bash it's own competition... the radio business has a bad rap as it is, why make it worse!

I agree with your take on Joe, they have done a good job. Sometimes, talent has blinders on - their ego wants them to think they are the stars - if a station is truly successful, it is much bigger than the sum of its parts.
