God Bless KTRB...

Oh my. There was a time, a while back, when KTRB (860 AM) would run nothing but dead air from an unfound satellite feed for hours, punctuated only with islands of commercials for their own programs.

This morning, perhaps in an effort to make up for it, KTRB is running a 2-for-1 special, broadcasting two programs at the same time. One is about a guidebook for women to learn about what makes men tick, the other is about something outdoorsy (Dragonfly Expeditions?). God bless 'em...

And yes, because I am a certifiable dope, I have had it on my radio all morning long. Can't drive by a train wreck without looking, can't tune past one without listening.

...And it continues through the 8 AM hour. Amazing.

No board op, no PD, no management listening...this is what you get. What a waste of not only the propane, but of all those watts!

Pretty sad excuse for a Radio Station, at 10am it seems to be cleared up, but listening I notice very few real commericials, Its mostly PSA's

They should sell this station to either Clear Channel, Entercom, or Cumulus. CBS is maxed out with radio ownership. I bet with the massive impressive signal. It's easily can be sold with some big $$$. Maybe not as much as pre-2008 price.

Hmmmm. Let's see. If Clear Channel were to acquire KTRB, They would probably swap KNEW's calls & Talk format to 860 with the sports format to 910. If Cumulus were to acquire KTRB, they would monopolize the sports radio scene in the bay area. If I had my way, I would rather see Entercom acquire their first AM Station in the Bay Area. But in reality, None of those three will acquire KTRB. Some other company will acquire it and change it to either a brokered religious station or brokered ethnic station.

Well, given that the A's season ended... and that the station's troubles are pretty much common knowledge, why would anyone want to advertise on there now?

My personal guess: the English language is not for long on KTRB. It will assuredly be brokered programming of some sort (which will probably make sense if they can move the night site to a reduced-power placement SOMEWHERE on the grid...)

If Clear Channel, Entercom or Cumulus are interested in the station... that would be shocking, to say the least. The station has way too many liabilities.

The propane cost during nighttime isn't an issue currently ... KTRB is essentially a daytimer right now -- unless they're running the station with the burners on low, and the nighttime signal just isn't drooling over the hills and reaching beyond Livermore.

If the station is on at night, I'm not hearing it.

Not only is the signal not reaching beyond Livermore...it's not reaching Livermore at all. It doesn't even make it to Sunol. I think they have the knob in the O-F-F position.

I've only sporadically tuned it in at night and there was so much noise in SF I couldn't tell if it was KTRB or someone else. Maybe they're just turning it off at night to save on expenses until they can figure out what to do with it. Talkradio doesn't get many listeners past 7pm anyway.

Sitting here at my desk, I heard the "zzzzip" on KCBS at 7:15 AM, signifying that they made the switch to their daytime pattern.

...So I immediately dialled over to 860 for a moment of silence (they were off on several earlier checks). Then, out of the ether a few seconds later, a Sports Byline USA rerun in progress suddenly pops on.

No station ID. No fanfare. No "This is KTRB, San Francisco, beginning its broadcast day." Just turn on the transmitter and let her run.

I believe the great Gary Radnich said it best: "Nobody cares. Nobody." And this is Nobody Cares Radio at its absolute nadir.

And of course an FCC violation for not IDing yourself at sign-on and sign-off.

KTRB must be thinking if Lumberyard 1440 (KAZG Scottsdale) can do the same thing for
the past five years or so and never get dinged, so can we. ::)

Don't be so sure that failing to ID at sign-on/sign-off is a violation anymore. I think the next (or previous, for sign-offs) TOH (or thereabouts) ID covers it.

So, is John's comment confirming that KTRB is effectively a daytimer now, and that the bank isn't paying for the propane at the night site? It would seem so, based on the reports in this thread.
