Gold to be tarnished

I agree with MOST of what you have said. However, I do believe that that the ownership made alot of promises about their plans with WIAU to get quality radio professionals on board. Stating that they would upgrade the singal and move the tower is just the start. I know that there were promises made that they either couldn't keep or had no intention of keeping (I think the latter). So instead of keeping the radio professionals on board that know how to program a station, or know how to sell a station; the "owners" decided to hold on to those that punched the hole in the bottom of the ship.

The bottom line is; that station will never have a decent signal in Indy as WHHH is the second adjacent channel as is WFMS. Neither will ever allow the interference. The people who bought the station either didn't do their due diligence or the firms they hired didn't. This station has about the same chance of being successful in Indy as does WCBK in Martinsville.

It is too bad they didn't figure it out til too late and had to get rid of all the old Gold 104.5 people.

The owners and their advisors (remember they also own WXLW with it's directional, non moveable signal) are stupid, stupid, stupid.

This was not the first rodeo for most of those quality radio professionals, especially Don and Steve. They know what can and can't be done in terms of tower moves and signal upgrades in that situation. I know they knew better than to believe any promises on that front.

However, promises made about "sticking with the format", "giving them all the resources", and "spending money to make money" are all ploys they may have fallen prey to. Many people still want to believe that Oldies is a viable format for larger markets. They tramped their way through the desert toward a mirage, and when they found no water, they still drank the sand.

BTW, the FM will start simulcasting the AM. ESPN Radio continues to lose patience with the lack of performance by WXLW and is threatening to drop. Expect it in time for March Madness.

I never understood why ESPN Jumped from a Relativley Better Signal in WNDE to the crappy signal of WXLW in the first place other than getting Dan Patrick Cleared in Indianapolis. Anyone in their right mind knows WXLW has always had a Crappy signal day and it gets no where at night but a little better than Connersville is getting with its local Service on 1580 and its whole 5 watts of power just around the tower LOL. at night here in anderson i get WWJ out of Detroit better than i would ever think of Getting WXLW. and i Live in the no aim area of the WWJ Lobes LOL

They didn't. 'NDE and CC did the dumping. They wanted to switch to Fox Sports Radio, syndicated by Premiere, which is owned by...

Make more sense?

Half the guys at WXLW at re-treads from 'NDE that weren't very good even back on the 12-6-oh. I keep expecting to hear John Punko on 950 any day now. I miss hearing him mispronounce "Terry Labonte."

the first time ESPN left NDE for WIBC was WIBC Stealing ESPN like they retook the Colts and stole the pacers from WNDE at the time in 94ish range. I Still though never understood why ESPN Settled for Crappy WXLW they could have tried to make some deal for WTLC-AM at the Time WTLC-AM has a better signal than WXLW

Never good to see sat sit good talent, but word has it that the "advisor" who trumpeted to the Byrd family buying 95.9, flipping to Oldies, tower/power possibilities, and big ratings plus millions in immediate revenue (punching the hole in the boat) departed many months ago.

What I don't get is when someone obtains that frequency they instantly want to go across County Line Road and compete against the "Big Boys"

It seems to me that frequency has been at its best when they have kept things to a Johnson County local feel when it was WIFN, WGAQ and even to some extent when it was 95.9 The Point.

They must have had some sort of friendly, affordable-based advertising rates because when the station was known with any of the calls above they had a lot of local mom and pop advertisers.

The answer to the WXLW question is Greg Rakestraw. He learned the in's and out's of ESPN radio while working as host of the Sports Daily on WNDE. When the relationship with CC got a little rocky, Rakestraw knew what to say to get ESPN on board. Ultimately, it was an opportunity for Rakestraw to stroke his own ego.

The "ownership" (we really should say the people that are paying the lease) should have left WIAU as a Christian format. At least the revenues were higher and the costs were lower. They didn't have to live up to such unrealistic expecations. UGH!!!

Does anyone know if WIAU is still operated under an LMA with Raven? Since they shuttered their staff near the one year anniversary of "Gold 95.9", it makes me wonder if they had the option to get out of the LMA at one year.

Wasn't WGAQ the one that crossed the Johnson/Marion county line when bought by the guy that owned the Indy Loves pro tennis team to compete with WENS?

The Franklin radio station does not have, and will never have, a signal that qualifies it as an Indianapolis radio station. I don't think Clear Channel will lose any sleep at the prospect of 95.9 being a threat to X103.

Why? Does Russ want to buy them? He needs a signal to take on X103.

You should know. :) Hey Frenchman...what ever happened to Dick Sickels and Steve White?

Dick is the regional manager for K-Love in Indiana. Steve's managing a CCM station in Arizona.
