Now a very cool "Kool Kat" oldies format, does anyone know where a lot of the old WRKG 1380, Lorain announcers went? If anywhere? Back when it was in the basement of the Antlers Hotel in Downtown Lorain? The era from after the remodeling from the hotel fire?(Early '90s 'til it's demise) Lauren Wreath used to do the "Live from the Lounge"jazz show in the hotel upstairs & did 7-Mid, Dave Rush Afternoon Drive, Charles Lubear Middays & "D.K" Donovan Kent did Morning Drive. I heard Donovan spent a little time at WOBL in the mid '90s but haven't heard where anyone else moved on to. Terry Burnabell was part time news, Jennifer Jay part time evenings, & Dean Raymond ??? Weekends? On a cloudy day you could pick that signal up here in Downtown Cleveland. I also recall the Spanish guy on the Ecos a Latinos Sunday show getting busted giving his Spanish business owner friends free live reads on his show(no one in the office knew Spanish so he slipped in the freebees!) Is anything in those old studios now? Jeff Baxter's voice was on there a while also. Veard Broadcasting Inc.

Wow, Carlos. You're just as scary as I can be sometimes with remembering DJ lineups ;)

That being said, I wouldn't know what's become of any of the hosts cited. There is a "Jennifer J" (Johndro) at WLKR-FM weekends, and has been there for quite a while. The only former WRKG personality who's still on the air in the area is sportscaster Jim Allen, who defected to WEOL in 1990 (which likely came with the sale of the station to Vernon Baldwin).

As for the past studios, WDLW (WRKG's successor) moved out of the Antlers in January of 2002 over to the WOBL studio/tx site, when they came into common ownership. Their one-time FM partner, WZLE/104.9, was bought by CC, became WAKS in 1999 and scooted to Tower City's Skylight Office Tower. While Vernon Baldwin was the owner, plus with the flip to an all-Hispanic format (which worked in many parts of Lorain - just not anywhere else) the studios had become pretty run down - especially towards the end.

Plus, the on-air sound was of pretty awful quality - which the Wilber family clearly took care of. And, Vernon was foolish to market the station towards Cleveland... while it was feasible for WZLE (and later with WAKS and WCLV), the night signal was purely for Lorain. Good luck with that. When WOBL bought the station, the Hispanic format was retained... which made for an amusing disparity of a little-listened to Hispanic station operating in the middle of the countryside. They gave up that November, and the "Kool Kat" was born.

If there is one real downside from WDLW's studios operating at the WOBL tx site, it's that there are occasional bleeding of audio from WOBL's carrier signal onto WDLW's carrier signal. It is infrequent, but is annoying and does lessen the otherwise good quality of the air-sound. They did a good job.

For all I know, that space is still vacant - and wouldn't be surprised, given the awful state that the city is in now. Jon Veard (of Veard Broadcasting) still owns the building after all these years. At least for now. He is planning to sell the building due to the continuious conflicts between him and Lorain's City Council.

Finally, Carlos, maybe you can help with a few questions about WRKG...
* When did the station go to a full-time signal? (Albeit with a whopping 57 watts... but at least it covers all of Lorain, especially with the graveyard channel it's on.) I do know that it was always a daytimer (even under the hidden existence of WWIZ) well into the 80's.
* And, what in the world did WRKG stand for? It couldn't have had anything to do with Veard, the Antlers, or of Lorain. The only thing I can think of is a contraction of the word "working..." but that's it...

Nathan - I have no idea what the call letters stood for...maybe they were the only ones available at the time, but about going 24 hours...it was around late summer/early fall of 1989. That was also when they picked up high school football(Charles LuBear & someone else doing play by play).
I was wrong on thr Jennifer Jay...it was Renee Jennifer(Cerosi) that part timed there near the end. Here's some other fun facts from"All the Radio You'll Ever Need":
*Joan Lowery(of Continental Cable & Bay Village resident) did Afternoon News,
*Miguel__?___ did the Ecos a Latinos show
*Jimmy Bryda(now passed away) did the Polka Express Sundays Noon -2
*Trevor Ducette was another weekender
*John Ryan was the short lived overnight voice & announced/board op-ed Afternoon Drive the final broadcast day while Dave Rush & others reminisced. He was also the one who fired the Star Spangled Banner for the very last time on that board(I taped them all).
Charles Fuller's "These Days of Christmas" was another memory & the Continuing Contest where you could win dinner from Swingos at the Statler was another.
*The final broadcast day Dave Rush brought his 4 year old daughter Mary in to say goodbye(she would be 21 now!)
*Final broadcast day was Monday, Feb. 12th 1990, 6:15pm. Hope that's not too much information! ~cARLOS

Nathan/Carlos

You are absolutely correct regarding the call letters. WRKG="WoRKinG for you is our business." That was the slogan we used. Kind of hokey but for a 500 watt daytimer, we did some pretty good billing.
The station went 24 hours in about 86-87, somewhere around then.
Miguel Berlingeri hosted "Ecos Latinos" and yes, he was caught giving away free advertising. We had a local Hispanic business owner translate the show one week for us!
The continuing contest was a Dick Conrad long time promotion.
Another air personality was John Antus, who was PM drive host in the mid-to late 80's. He went on to WKNR in the 90's and was pretty successful there. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack about five years ago.
Oh yeah, Craig Demyan was News Director!

I had that feeling about the call sign meaning - and that was just a guess on my part :) I do remember hearing about John Antus being at WRKG way back when, too...

I have been trying to compile a whole history of what's now WDLW on Wikipedia. And this thread has been very helpful in deciphering the history of WRKG... hope you guys don't mind...

But needless to say, the station's a lot older than anyone thinks... it, in truth, signed on in 1958 as WWIZ! But it was soon revealed that the first owner secretly acted in collusion with the Lorain Journal to start the station, and sold it to the Journal. Because the FCC wasn't notified, WWIZ was forced off the air in 1967 - the result of a five-year long fight.

The license was put in a trusteeship, and was revived in 1969 as WLRO. It's there that most people associate the station as starting, with WWIZ being ignored otherwise. Oh, and to add to the intrigue, Jeff Baxter happened to be the first PD for WWIZ AND WLRO! (And yes, this history has reportedly astouded WDLW's current ownership and staff!)

It would also be interesting if any photos or old advertisements of WRKG still exist after all these years...

THE NORM N. NITE??? Later of WGAR-AM, WMJI-FM and WCBS-FM fame - and who helped lead the effort to bring the Rock Hall to Cleveland? The same person?

Micheal Shay, ( later of WOHO Toledo ) Jim Huges and Roy Christian at one time or another.
