I've been poking around on Google Maps today...
In 1979 I was on my (2nd) UN peace keeping tour and was based in Ismailia Egypt. It was in Egypt (Port Said) that I bought my first radio, a Sony CF-270L, which featured AM/FM/SW and cassette.
It was in Egypt where I was first exposed to the BBC World Service, which could be heard on the MW band, broadcasting from Cyprus. I could also pick FM stations from Cyprus, some of which came in full blown, clear of interference on a regular basis, from my 3rd floor lodgings in Ismailia. One of these was the BFBS, transmitting on 92.1 from RAF Akrotiri.
Just now, using Daft Logic (http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm) I've figured out the exact distance between my lodgings and the (current) location of the BFBS transmitter site at RAF Akrotiri. The results? 279 miles or 449 km. I had no idea!
Back then, as a young lad, I just started out into the world of radio. And it was my early experiences there, that fired up my interest in radio. Wouldn't it have been neat to have all the tools and resources we have today...wouldn't it be neat to be DXing from there today?
