Good book for CBS...wow!

Funny nobody mentioned it here.

CBS stations 1-2-3-and 4 in the latest ratings (12+).

WPEG
WBAV
WSOC
WKQC

WKKT was the highest rated Clear Channel station.

It will be interesting to see what the reaction is to this (if any).

I'll weigh in with a question. Is Clear Channel Charlotte management as dumb and egomaniacal as the people they have in Raleigh and Greensboro? Hey....wait a minute...the Clear Channel Charlotte management are the same people as Raleigh and Greensboro! No wonder Dick, Entercom, Curtis, Capital, Lincoln Financial, CBS and Radio One love competing with them.

This seems to be the Morgan Bohannan Formula:

Hire people who will do anything you say.
Be sure to clear John Boy & Billy even though they stopped working in 1999.
Spend a small fortune on TV while cutting live staff and delivering garbage formats.
Hire some of the worst salespeople around and then promote them to management.
Tell corporate to spend more on promotion and things will turn around next year.
When next year comes, fire a few managers and repeat the process.

And people wonder why the Mays are selling out?

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! You nailed the Morgan Bohannon philosophy! You forgot to mention...don't think for yourself...just do whatever the higher-ups think might work...after all, those are the people that are keeping you afloat. And above all...don't do anything that would mean putting your neck on the line, even if it's right!

I would not say that CC was alone in that thinking. Most of the radio groups don't seem to like spending money on talent, even though that's what makes them diffferent from the competition.

For the most part wages have not kept pace with other industries and having lots of experience can be more of a negitive rather than a positive.

On the plus side, I think the staff is more motivated and dedicated than ever in trying to do their best work on the air. That's what I have seen anyway.

Of course they are! It's not the staff! They'll do their very best because they love the biz! The problem is CC doesn't love them or have any loyalty at all to them. There's no room for error with Clear Channel. And, we are all only human. Sooner or later, you might not be on top, or there might be some stupid reason beyond your control, and that's when they'll dump you. Or, if they can find someone to do your job cheaper.

I'm willing to bet CC higher ups (by that I mean those who don't have office spaces in the market) control the management on a local level and give them a bad name to everyone who loves to crucify clear channel from down the street. I agree, there's not much room for error. It's not a great thing, but it's nothing that you can blame on anyone working in the same building. Ease up guys. The rants are played out.

From what I heard, most CC Greensboro stations aren't doing too bad vs the rest of the market.

I don't think you can blame CC really. The problems of radio today certainly don't belong to any single group. Anyone who expects an employer to be loyal is going to be disappointed, not just in radio but in many fields. If you find a place to work where this is even a little loyalty toward employees consider it a gift and appreciate it.

I would have gone to work for CC (part-time) if they hadn't demanded I sign a non-compete contract. Before the messages start about how you can beat such a contract let me say if I sign something I will abide by it, and I won't sign something that I consider not in my best interests.

If they don't tolerate ristakes it's good I didn't wok thr becuz I makes uh-bunch (oops).

Darn those hugh-mons anyway! (sorry just trying to lighten the mood around here!!!)

The problem of loyalty has been a problem for people in radio for years. How many times (even before consolidation) did you find yourself on the short end of the stick at a station you loved?

It took me several times to learn that the business will always decide in favor of the business and the individual must always decide in favor of the individual! It is business and has been for year.

Problem is most of use who spent a lifetime in radio did it for emotional reasons rather than business ones.

Wow truer words were never said!

1979 was a really bad year for me, way before consolidation! I worked for something like 3 or 4 stations in that one year alone.

Got into radio because I loved it, not for the money. That makes me a sucker for sure!

In a group exercise, we were once asked why we came to work each day. I replied - entertainment. I loved my job that much! I sacrificed thousands of dollars in salary to work in radio. We always strived to be the best and we were. I guess I just felt really resentful when all the consolidation happened and messed it all up. I worked with the same people for years until the corporations took over and got rid of the Managers who made the station what it was. Once they were gone, there was no longer a history with my new managers...no longer a culture...just a big consolidated mess. And, to make matters worse, the new Managers were'nt 1/10th the talent they were replacing. It makes my blood boil just to think about it.

I remember my first job - $1.25 an hour - doing 12M - 6AM and cleaning up after Russ Spooner! Then off to the TV station at 6:30AM for a five hour booth announcer gig at $1.50 an hour. No wonder my grades in college suffered! :~)
