Good-bye, Bob. Hello, Katie.

Just saw this cross the wires. Katie Couric's deal as a new
anchor of CBS Evening News is expected to be announced within the
next day or two. The deal is already agreed in principle.

Huh? Which "Wire?" What's the source?

So that we don't have to go on some wild goose chase, I for one would appreciate it if you could state and link the source of your information?
Otherwise, just about anybody can come on here and for the purpose of starting a new thread claim to have "just seen this cross the wires."

Really?
Which "wires?" Because I can't find any new information on this?

Anyone?

Just saw a bulletin about it on LostRemote.com

Also, according to the blurb (which isn't much to go on), the story at TVWeek.com is unavailable, becuase the heavy traffic of others trying to access the story crashed the site.

The real news in all this appears to be that Meredith Viera has been tapped to replace Katie. Interesing developments indeed!

Also, Drudge Report is now also reporting the story:

As the moderator ...

1. I find Garrett's question perfectly reasonable. I would have asked the same question if he hadn't beaten me to it.

2. I find you to be more representative of your accusation.

Katie Couric's departure from NBC???? Big Fat Deal! So What!!! Or as
Ben Stein would say "Oh... Wow... with his red eyes blinking!

Re: Links to this breaking story...

> Was it just a coincidence that last week NBC started a promo campaign for their news team ('the spirt of america' or something),which lead me to believe it was a done deal, though I've always believed Couric was leaving.
I think it's a very good move for CBS,though not because Katie is a big talent. But she can be a difference maker and CBS has nothing to lose. Why can't she be #1, at least in the short term? ABC is in flux and Williams is ok at NBC but I don't see him as a real franchise guy.
* Katie still has 2 months left on her deal, does she go on vacation after the announcement or do they have a potential Stern situation, with her hinting she's on her way to Blackrock?

she's coming back from vacation tomorrow. nbc controls the situation
right now. technically, she can't negoatiate with anyone until may 1
unless nbc waives exclusive period knowing that she has already made
up her mind to leave 'today' at the end of her contract. even if she does accept cbs' offer she'll work on today thru may 31 because nbc will milk
this for all they can. kind of like stern's prolonged goodbye last year.
in any case, nbc and cbs have to let their plans be known before
may upfronts begin.

WHY Meredith Viera?!

While I never warmed up to Couric, I cannot stand Viera! If it is true she is Couric's replacement, why didn't NBC give the position to Anne Curry or Campbell Brown?

The CBS news division has done it again!

With apologies to our Vice President....CBS has once again "shot itself in the foot!" Just shows how corporate prefers "pretty" over professional! I guess the current group of suits have forgotten about a previous pairing of Harry Reasoner with another popular "female news anchor?" It only took a few short months for that corporate decision to reach a climax!

Bob Schieffer and his staff have my sincerest condolences. It was such a pleasure to watch all the hard work and effort everybody put in! Somehow "all the players" managed to put together a credible, interesting newscast that wasn't entirely built around the anchorperson sitting at the desk! Do you think this will still continue when Ms Couric assumes the position???

So congratulations CBS....you've lost me (and probably another viewer or two)! I won't bring up the 27 million dollar per year paycheck except for the fact that some of that money probably could've been better spent on improving some of your primetime entertainment product?

And as pretty as she is...and as consise as her reports have been overseas...I'll miss Lara Logan! Now there's a professional who is easy on the eye and definitely KNOWS her work! But I'm still switching to another network!

One final thought....is there anybody out reading this who might be ready to collaborate with me on a made-for-tv movie script? My working title is "BAD MOVE AT BLACK ROCK?"

Katie has been discussed to death so rather than..

...continue on about her, how about discussing the other major players in the upcoming proposed changes and how they will fare should these moves pan out.

FTVLive.com is reporting on these proposed ABC and NBC musical chairs (dependent on Katie moving to CBS Evening News):

-Meredith Vieira moves from ABC's "The View" to co-anchor of NBC's Today Show. She also loses her hosting gig of the syndicated "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". No word on who picks up the "Millionaire" gig. Suggestions?

-Charlie Gibson leaves ABC's "Good Morning America" to become sole anchor of "World News Tonite" replacing Elizabeth Vargas. Yes, I know this part of the equation has been discussed to death as well.

-Elizabeth Vargas moves to The View (or even GMA) although not necessarily as host. She is pregnant and will be out on maternity leave several months from now. She will continue to co-host 20/20.

-Diane Sawyer gains a new co-host (Vargas?) on GMA but becomes primary anchor on the show (much like Katie's current star-shiney status on Today).

Now...you can all try discussing this stuff without mentioning the words "Katie Couric" ;o)

Re: The CBS news division has done it again!

First of all,
Aside from what we read on Sunday, has there been an actual announcement yet? Becuase, until there is, CBS has not done anything.

Second, you are assumming that Katie is being hired for her looks and not for her 30 years in journalism. Sorry if you don't like her, but lets keep this about the facts not about whetehr or not you like her.

I don't think she's right for the job, but because I don't think she has the right profile, but because she can not do it at all.

I probably should have made this clearer in my earlier post (and I sincerely apologize).

However...based on all the threads I've read today (on 5 completely different websites) there's clearly a stronger NEGATIVE WRITTEN OPINION regarding Ms Couric's prime-time anchoring abilities....along with her move from "The Peacock Network" to "The Black Rock?"

Maybe I'm mistaken here....but wouldn't this much 'negative feedback' indicate anything....to whoever is authorizing a "direct deposit" to the Couric bank account?

Incidentally, I agree with your comment about Katie "not being right for the job!" When a viewer has seen the same "morning face" for so many years...it's not always easy to accept that same face 12 hours later?

[Food for thought. David Letterman's original NBC morning show never caught on with viewers and advertisers----but his "late night excursions" have been incredibly good and moderately successful!]

The only negative discussion that I have heard is from other journalists or tv enthusiasts. The general public seems to be neutral to positive when I bring the subject up. I have my own personal opinion, but frankly I only get to watch the evening news if I'm on vacation or home sick from work! In this day and age, it's really irrelevant!

Just for fun....go into www.ivillage.com (which is a woman's network dealing with relationships, make-up and other feminine issues). There was a thread about Katie's move on Monday. Of the 65 responses that I read from "average viewers"...and non media types...the consensus was that the move was a bad one!
If you don't believe me...visit the site!

Please understand that I harbor no ill feelings for Ms Couric, her talents (which I admire) or her ability to move into a new role (as a primetime anchor). The complaint I have is that CBS has shifted gears from the total news team concept (which many of us like....to focusing it's primetime half hour around a woman who is a morning talk show host...and NOT A NEWS ANCHOR!

And my question all along has been: "WILL THE CBS NIGHTLY NEWS AUDIENCE "ACCEPT AND EMBRACE" THE CHANGE?

Letterman's morning show was one you had to WATCH; it wasn't
visual radio, and not everyone was primed to sit down with
his brand of humor at 10 in the morning. Fred Silverman, who
was running NBC at the time, had visions of making Letterman
into a second Arthur Godfrey, who dominated the mornings on
CBS in the '50s. He seems to have forgotten that Godfrey's
show started on radio and was simulcast in both media, and
that Letterman's on-air persona bears no resemblance to Godfrey's.
You could have Godfrey on and do something else; with Letterman,
you have to be prepared to invest some time watching--like at
11:35 PM.

That said, it doesn't follow that evening-news viewers will not
accept a morning-show host. Tom Brokaw is proof of that, and no
one seems to have problems with Charlie Gibson when he anchors
ABC's World News Tonight (else why do so many people on this board
mention him as a possible permanent anchor?). It's just that
too many people (including yours truly) see Katie as too perky
for the evening news, which some of us (again, including yours truly)
still take seriously.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if a couple of years from now Katie
is doing the sort of specials for CBS that Barbara Walters does for
ABC.
