Good-Bye, NBC Sports "L-Square"

After a couple of years, the "L-Square" that NBC Sports used on it's telecasts of Notre Dame home football games and the Arena Football League is gone.

Like ABC did on "Monday Night Football", NBC is now using a bar running along the bottom of the screen to indicate score, down, period and time left.

If anything, the NBC bottom of the screen bar seems a little smaller than what ABC has used on it's two primetime NFL games so far this season.

I suspect NBC will also use the bar along the bottom of the screen for the Arena Football League next Spring and Sunday-night NFL games when NBC begins carrying them a year from now.

I also would think NBC will also use a bottom-of-the-screen bar for hockey, both for NHL games (starting in January) and men's/women's hockey games at the Winter Olympics in February both on NBC and it's cable partners.

Change not for the better

At least I could READ the old graphic. I almost have to sit next to the 27-incher to read the NBC one - and the quarter/time part on the right is getting cut off on the corner of the screen.

Great.. So now we're gonna get complaints that we're keying the legal over the score.

Might be your set. The new NBC bar is clearly visible on my 27 incher...and the updates they run underneath....

I love it. I think it's far less obtrusive. However, I can completely see your point. When I was watching the Notre Dame game today at work on an older TV set, you could barely read the score update. I'm just glad I'm obsessed enough to have known all the scores already.

You definitely need a larger screen to read NBC's graphics..I have a 20-inch TV, and the bar was 'squeezed' at the bottom.
Plus, NBC seems to prefer smaller fonts for their graphics...I guess there's no happy medium between making them 'too big' or 'too small', but NBC's info seemed to be the smallest font I've seen on any channel.
