Good-Bye WDIF

Beginning November 12th, 106.9 WMRN-FM will no longer be Buckeye Country, Marion. The ClearChannel station has cleared all hurdles and will move that signal to Dublin, Ohio where it will operate on the 106.7 frequency.

The country music format will move to WDIF, 94.3. WDIF’s current "mix" format will not be replaced.

95.9, WYNT, will stay in place with their adult contemporary format. WMRN-AM, 1490, will also not be moved.

Around November 12, Buckeye Country will simulcast on both 106.9 and 94.3 as they prepare for the move.

This completes a station shuffle that began when ClearChannel purchased WYNT in Upper Sandusky. They moved that signal to Marion, officially Caledonia, and then planned to move the areas largest radio signal to the Columbus area.

The moves were subject to objections from the public and other station operators. There was even a lawsuit filed at one point.

At this point, the remaining Marion ClearChannel stations are for sale.

WDIF in the 70s and early 80s was great..anyone remember?

Sure, I remember the 'body watching tee shirts' each summer in the late 1970's

Not sure I follow the logic either. What does one have to do with the other? If I were a betting man, I would put my money on the fact that the powers at CC were waiting on the summer numbers to come out before they made their decision on a format. Could be wrong, maybe they already decided. Who knows?

Agreed. There is NOTHING in that link that points to the format that will be used on the new station in Dublin. They don't even say whether or not the simulcast will continue after the move or not (which of course it *will* but the point is, I don't see anything pointing to format). Someone know something they should have kept in the bag?

I'm telling you guys. WTVN will be both on AM and FM.
I really think this is happening. This will kill 103.9 and CC will have entire ownership of news/talk just like they do in Cincinnati.

Do you really need an anvil to crush a flea? If killing WTDA were actually the primary motivation for taking 106.9 talk, then this would veer into the realm of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or paranoia. In that case, they would be well advised to seek out a corporate psychologist like the one profiled in the October Columbus Monthly.

First off let me say I apologize for stating that 106.7 will go Urban. It is a guess based on office rumors from when I worked there. Rumor had it that they were going Urban...imaging was already done up...library already to go...and the call letters decided upon.
Granted this was back in the fall of '05 when I worked for CC. Since then alot of numbers have changed. So who knows. I've also heard the possiblity about an Active Rock station. I have to agree that they will wait for summer numbers but I can almost bet we will see the following...."Your Home For The Most Holiday Music in Central Ohio. 93 3 WLZT and 106.7 W***"

or 106.7 takes over the 610 line up and 610 goes all sports to take out WBNS-am. Just like WIBC here in indianapolis is moving from 1070 to 93.1 while 1070 goes all sports taking espn radio from 950. I know the Fox Sports Radio isnt on the air in C-Bus

Sorry to break the news... but... WTDA-FM IS a Fox Sports affil. Pretty much airs all night and on weekends on the Ted. CC already tried a mainly FSR-automated sports format on 1230 seven years ago... obviously that didn't work. Besides, the main name of the game - sports-wise - in the market is... OSU. Not the Blue-Jackets, not the Clippers, and certainally not the Crew.

WBNS has the OSU rights. You want to dethrone them? Then try to steal the rights away from the Wolfe family... and good luck with that. WBNS simulcasting their air signal on 97.1-FM looks infinitely more probable (and that SHOULD be the case anyway).

Simulcasting WTVN on 106.7-FM is probable, at least for the short term. Honestly, I can't think of a logical format for CC to plant on there that isn't established on any of their other stations, or could undercut into their ratings.

You're on drugs!

The 106.7 FM signal isn't worthy of the city's only commercial News-Talk station. Won't have anywhere near the coverage of a full-power Class-B. My calculations may be off, but 7,300 watts at 591 feet sounds like an ERP somewhere below 25,000 watts (WBNS is 20,500 watts at 781 feet) .... 15,000 watts, maybe?

Why would WTVN go from coverage well into Indiana and Michigan to barely covering Franklin and Delaware Counties.

That would really be dumb!

I could see a simulcast, not displacing the 610 format, although the coverage well into Michigan and Indiana doesn't matter as they're not selling advertising there. (Any more than WIBC's coverage into Ft. Wayne matters).

Honestly Clear Channel probably will screw this up too. Thats all they know how to do. Its kinda sad dont you think?

Could they go Contemporary Christian and sell it as a combo with WLZT? They would try to wipe out CVCO and dont think they wont try! Right now Clear Channel has Country, Top 40, AC, Classic Hits and News/Talk. Something is telling me they will try to build off of their Contemporary Brands. I would be the first to assume a Rhythmic Station of sorts, but I could be shocked...they may try to burn up the Modern Rockers on this one.

Last I heard from T-R-I is American Securities deal is off and now the fire sale has begun. They are looking to dump Marion, Sandusky, Lima, Chillicothe and Findlay to whoever wants them. I knew that Elyria Lorain was bidding for Sandusky and Saga has been eyeing Marion to cluster with their eventual purchase of Mansfield. Chillicothe could go any way and Lima / Findlay, who has a clue..no one wants them. Could this mean RadiOhio expanding at somepoint?

I was thinking 106.7 would be meant more for at night as while 610 is great during the day, once night falls, forget it.

First off, the sales of Marion, Chillicothe, Washington Court House, etc, were all the plan from day one CC announced it was going private. They are wanting to stay in the top 100 markets, that's why CC stations in Chillicothe, Marion, etc, is for sale. Ashtabula sale is already complete, along with Sandusky I think? While the other formentioned markets are in the process of being sold to the same company (to Good Radio or something like that?).

As for 106.7. CC would not put a WTVN simulcast on that signal because it is only 7,300 watts. If they were smart and wanted to do a WTVN simulcast, move what's on 93.3 to 105.7, and move The Brew to 106.7, and then simulcast WTVN on 93.3 (and make it WTVN-FM). That way both stations are on the same tower, and 93.3 sure does take care of their southern nighttime coverage problem, while maintaining the WTVN-AM daytime coverage that they have.

Goodradio deal has been nixed. Its not happening now. They found out that Dean Goodman basically didnt know what he was doing and the investment company got stuck with a ton of stations. Now American Securities (who likes the business) but doesnt want that many stations, is going to dump the whole thing and all the stations are for sale again!

Ashtabula went to the Embracia's Media One who wants to rebuild their broadcasting empire in markets on the northcoast. Could the bidding wars for Sandusky happen? Who knows...Embracia used to own Sandusky.

Marion, Saga really likes the market and it would compliment their mega powerhouses WYHT (mansfield) and WSNY (Columbus).

Chillicothe/WCH has been eyed by a group with the name Buckeye Broadcast Communications. BBC has a chief investor by the name of Randy Michaels. But ironically it has a secondary investor who happens to own a crap load of stations in West Virginia.

Lima/Findlay. These stations have been shopped by Double O Broadcasting who owns stations in Florida, New York, Texas, Louisiana and South Carolina - and yes, they want this cluster too!

What once was supposed to be the "Good Radio TV" Empire is no-longer and American Securites wants to grow in markets close to its homebase of Savannah Georgia, so look for them to nab stations in Georgia, Virginia and the Carolina's...not Ohio.
