Good Daytime AM Conditions

From NE NC today at solar noon EST. 740 CFZM Toronto 530+ miles and WSB Atlanta 750 at 490+ miles. Car radio in parking lot.

How about the lower-freq. Toronto AMs like 590, 640, 680? Didn't WGTM go off the air? Might be your chance...

cd

Just checked. 590 WLES Richmond,VA. 640 WFNC Fayetteville 680 WPTF Raleigh. 740 CFMZ and 750 WSB still in but weaker.

:( Richmond has a 590?? That might be new after Lynchburg vacated it.

I kinda expected that 640 & 680. CJCL 590 might have the same pattern to the north in the day as at night. Oh well.

Here in northern VA, WNIS in Norfolk seemed a little stronger this early afternoon. No change in WLES's signal strength, very weak as usual.

Daytime a little different today. 630 WMAL was strong but 1500 WFED a no show. Favored lower end of band. No X bands except for 1650 Portsmouth, VA WHKT.

With DX'ing, no matter when or where you turn on the receiver, the opportunities and possibilities are limitless.

Over the weekend, I was amazed to hear a very strong 1030/KCTA during "extended" sunrise reception conditions.

This is why, even though it is sedentary, considered nerdy, and mostly a singular hobby, I love DX'ing.

For the OP....I am not sure if the info I see online is up-to-date....

Is WLES on 590 all the time now? I see daytime 580/night 590....

I don't think the info is up to date. I hear the station on 590 on days but at night, it's a jumble of stations including the Cuban classical station. WLES used to be on 580.

According to what can be determined from FCC records, WLES is operating from Bon Air (Richmond area) on 590 under an STA, apparently with the authorized 600 day/58 watts night.

Meanwhile WLVA Lynchburg (authorized for 250 day/14 night) was, at last report, still silent under an STA since they had not completed construction for operation on 580. They had been operating with a temporary facility (a long wire antenna) but that was subsequently dismantled.

The two stations are now commonly owned, and being that WLES's operation on 590 was contingent upon WLVA moving to 580, they assured the FCC that the abandonment of 590 in Lynchburg is permanent. The STA's for both stations have been extended several times.

Most Canadian AMs have nulls to the south. Usually a little less severe in the daytime. The Toronto 590, however, has a fulltime tight pattern.
