Good Idea?

At the CHR I work for, our PD (who is also the MD due to a skeleton crew) is transforming the station from a Gold-Heavy Rhythmic-leaning CHR, to more of a Mainstream CHR that plays mainly currents, with some recurrents, and no gold at all. This has been slowly happening since the beginning of this month and should be finished by the end of summer. He said he is aiming for something similar to the old "Hot Hits" format in the 80's. He thinks this is a terrific idea ???. Is it a smart move, or is he going to run our 6 month old CHR into the ground?

I'm only an Engineer for the station, I have no say in what direction he takes the station, I just wanted to see what you guys think of this.

I will admit that I don't respect this guy very much, as he has ran the station pretty sloppy so far but has been raking in great ratings. Is he waking up now, or a dumb idea?

Do you know if he did any research on this? If he did and the results show that it's what the audience wants, then it's a good idea. If he didn't research and still decided to do this, then it's more of a risk. Only time can really tell if what he wants to do will work.

Are we talking about Z-104.3 Baltimore here?

I like the "Hot Hits" concept, and it seems to be working pretty well for some CHRs at the moment. Doesn't mean the station will always to be current-intensive, but if it's something that can work well right now then why not.

In the Mid 90s it was the other way around, with a lot of CHR/Pop stations playing plenty of Recurrents, as well as 80s and early 90s hits. A good example is this 45 minute aircheck of 101.3 KDWB Minneapolis from 1996:

He has not done any research on it, making it a big gamble. :-\ We either win big or loose big. And no this is not Z 104.3 Baltimore, it's an internet only CHR called Channel 99.9.

Yeah, I know of you. I'm the MD of HitzRadio.com so I know most Internet broadcasters. You guys should get a decent server first ;)

How long have you been MD? The station recently got a huuuge facelift from what I've seen. Haha I know, we're upgrading it to hold more slots soon.

How's RDL 101.1 ;D

...and by facelift, the station seems to have really changed, for the better in my opinion. Before I got into the internet radio scene I was a listener, so I check back on the station every now and then.

You are internet radio. Doesn't really matter what you do. What'd your daily listenership? Do you make any money?

Anything launching and trying to reinvent itself just 6 months later hasn't given the original enough time. You will run off a good portion of what you already have. It's internet radio, why not just start ANOTHER station and have 2 the compliment each other?
