Good Locally Owned Stations

For as much as we all complain about things in the radio biz, let's be positive and admit that NE PA does happen to have more locally-owned, mom and pop stations than most other areas. I'm wondering what your favorite mom and pop NE PA stations are. Which ones are especially good? It's a plus if they stream because i'm going to make an effort to listen to more of them. I'll start. In Schuylkill County, where I'm from, WMGH/WLSH (FM/AM sister stations from Tamaqua) and WAVT/WPPA (FM/AM sister stations from Pottsville).

Re: Good Locally-Owned Stations

Last I heard LSH/MGH has no interest in streaming. Air talent whose families live beyond the coverage area would like to hear the stations, along with former residents out-of-state who want to keep up with happenings in Eastern Schuylkill and Carbon. Lets hope the Fulmers change their mind.

Jeepers cats! In Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the best I can come up with is Bold Gold, which is a regional group, and Times-Shamrock.

I've worked for horrible local companies and really good out of towners. Location of the home office really isn't a factor, although it should be.

WABT Pocono 96.7 is an excellent local station my area. They are committed to being local with up to date power outages, local news, community events, and to add they play very good music with very few commercials. Sadly their signal is only good in Monroe and Pike counties

A big 'second' here for WAVT-WPPA.

No doubt it helps to have the biggest FM and the biggest AM signals in the county in the same building, but every conversation or visit or encounter I've had with any individual at their South Centre Street place has been a good one. I never worked for them, but with the consistency of the programming I've heard on both WAVT and WPPA since I moved to here twenty years ago, they sound solid.

(At one time there were four stations in that building. WSPI 99.7 and WPAM 1450 were the other two billboarded on their front wall)

I never hear much about the Sunbury Broadcasting people. Listening to the consistency of Eagle 107, WKOK and (of course) 94KX all these years, the thought here is that their ownership must be equally impressive.

Hmmmm Gem and KZ96.9 come to mind...da. I think HLM should be on that list too... Regardless of your opinion...Times-Shamrock and Bold Gold are on the list too...they are local.

I always listen to Bud Williamson's Pocono 967, even with barley any signal in Bethlehem. When traveling past Milford, I tuned to his 106.9 WYNY and it sounded excellent. I only had it on for about a half hour, but heard some awesome songs that you never hear on Cumulus's narrow playlist on Magic 93 or WLEV in Allentown. Now if only one day I can save WSBG, the station I grew up with, from it's horrible kiddie music.

Re: Good Locally-Owned Stations

Listened to YNY this morning. Music, NBC News at :58 followed by Mike Spiel's weather, more music. No local news or DJ.

Re: Good Locally Owned Stations/ Is streaming worth the $$$?

Cosmo--for the record, streaming is extremely expensive to run; some have tried it and discontinued due to the prohibitive cost. I think it's a great feature to have; but in reality, what does it do for the station? Except for the national spots, being able to hear local but out of reach advertisers is not a value add. I'm out of the loop, any discussion as to whether streaming is worth the expense??

oldies4ever ;D

I agree on WHLM. Good full service station. They run talk in the morning with limited music, an oldies hour at Noon and a "Solid Gold" 60's,70's weekend with a live oldies show Saturday morning. Everything else at that time is voice tracked. An oldies based AC during the week, a lot of local sports and CBS news every hour.
