I don't know if all the stations are still on the air, but there were a huge variety of rock stations available in Phoenix when I was there a couple of years ago. Compare that to one in New York City, a station that only plays Classic Rock.

Exactly. How about a thread that has "Bad markets for rock" with NYC being the worst. I just find it hard to believe that market #1 has no current rock station now. CBS made a huge mistake. K-Rock probably would've had better numbers outside of Stern compared to Free Fm. How much longer will it be until another broadcasting company tries rock in NYC. And dont give me that "New York isnt a rock market" Bull S@#$!!!!!!

Man, Houston has got to be #2 behind that. We have one classic rock station in town, and another classic rocker trying to target Houston from an antenna nearly 70 miles east of the city. Long gone are the days that KLOL ruled the airwaves in Houston Texas.
______________

If you go into metrowest Boston (Framingham area), where there aren't any close FM towers, you can get tons of rock stations. Here's a list from the top of my head...

92.1 WFEX Peterborough, NH (WFNX simulcast): alternative
92.5 WXRV Haverhill, MA (The River): AAA
92.9 WBOS Brookline, MA: AAA
94.1 WHJY Providence, RI (94HJY): Rock
95.5 WBRU Providence, RI: Alternative
96.5 WMLL Manchester, NH (The Mill): Classic rock
100.1 WWFX Southbridge, MA (The Pike): Classic hits
100.3 WHEB Portsmouth, NH: Rock
100.7 WZLX Boston, MA: Classic rock
101.1 WGIR Manchester, NH: Rock (was active rock)
101.7 WFNX Lynn, MA: Alternative
104.1 WBCN Boston, MA: Rock (not really alternative anymore)
105.7 WROR Framingham, MA: Classic hits
106.3 WFNQ Nashua, NH (Frank): Classic hits
107.3 WAAF Worcester, MA: Rock (not really active rock anymore)

Some stations are spottier than other, but not a bad place to be if you like rock!

Why does the weather have to suck for the radio to really rock?

In the Reading, PA area, you can pick up the following rock stations :

93.3 WMMR/Philadelphia (rock)
94.1 WYSP/Philadelphia (active rock/talk)
95.1 WZZO/Bethlehem (rock)
97.3 WRVV/Harrisburg (rock ac)
99.9 WODE/Easton (classic hits)
102.5 WRFY/Reading (rock ac, heavy on classic rock)

96.5- WFAT- Portage- Classic Rock (was recently a Classic Hits station)
104.9- WWKN- Marshall- Classic Rock
107.7- WRKR- Portage- Rock

Those are just the ones that can be heard with a basic home stereo.. If you have a good car stereo, these stations are also available.

94.1- WVIC- Jackson- Classic Hits
96.9- WLAV- Grand Rapids- Classic Rock
97.9- WGRD- Grand Rapids- Alternative

I would humbly nominate Chicago for #3. Has lost EVERY rock outlet except WLUP and WDRV. WDRV might as well be oldies...imagine hearing Carly Simon cold into Skynyrd and you have the Drive....boring. WLUP hasn't been able to do anything for YEARS. Crap ass jocks and music that makes no sense.

Chicago shows potential for Rock....WILL in Kenosha has done VERY well for years as Active Rock stuck on a suburban signal. WXRD and WRXQ are classic rockers with Bob and Tom in the south burbs and NW Indiana. Also, WERV has just put on a harder rock station called the Rapids on HD.

But as for a good ol fashioned rock and roll station in Chicago....GOOD FREAKIN LUCK

Well, how about the Orlando market? I was there about a year ago and heard two pretty good stations if you're into Rock: WJRR (Real Rock 101.1), an edgy Active Rocker, and WOCL (O-Rock 105.9), an Alternative station that's almost like the Anti-Jack with their slogan, "We Play What You Want". Both stations have pretty eclectic playlists and were better than average for their respective formats. I understand that the latter station has struggled in the ratings since I've been there and some changes have been made, though, but to the best of my knowledge the format is still Alternative.

Re: Good markets for rock.... Tampa

Tampa Bay Rock Radio: has always been a good rock town. Has not had a dance station since 1979.

97.1 97x Alt. Rock
97.9 98 Rock Active Rock
102.5 New 1025 Hard Classic Rock
103.5 Thunder 1035 (In its last days Ron Diaz (long-time Tampa radio man left for sister Sports Talk station. CC placed Bob and Tom in the morning and ratings tumbled to CB status. This legend recently switched to Country). Damn! :'(
107.3 1073 Eagle Classic Hits (Juke Box format: really is a Cl. Rocker that works as a combo with 102.5).

kzmz 96.9 rocks alexandria louisiana..just started adding some new rock to its playlist and opened up the classic rock library.

Cape May, New Jersey used to be a great place from rock stations a few years back......It's still reasonable today but no where near as good it once was:

Rock Stations a few years ago:

93.5 WZBH - Georgetown, DE - Active Rock - "The Beach"
94.7 WRDX - Dover, DE - Classic Rock - "WRDX"
95.9 WOSC - Bethany Beach, DE - Active Rock "96 Rock"
