Good Morning America 8/29/05

Did anyone see the opening on the east cost of GMA this morning, I don't usually watch it, but it was on that channel. It opened with a recording of Charles Gibson voice over for "BREAKING NEWS" but the camera cut to them as it was playing and you could see Gibson looking upset and throwing something at the desk...it was odd, and it seemed like his co-anchors were thrown off by it or something? Just curious if anyone else saw it.

I did not see the opening of the show in question, but I think that what happened was that Charles Gibson had (perhaps just before 7 A.M. EDT) recorded a voice-over which was to accompany footage of the storm that had been taped and fed to New York just before Gibson recroded the voice-over.

Someone may have accidentally switched the video from the tape to Gibson live in the studio.

BTW, the program continued (at least on WCVB-5 in Boston) until 12 Noon EDT.

WTNH Channel 8 in New Haven carried GMA until 11AM going into the Season Premire of the View at 11AM. WTNH blew out Regis & Kelly, an infomerical, and Judge Joe Brown. They even continued their local cut-ins at :25 and :55 past the hour. (I assume an infomercial was scheduled for 10AM. Usually 3 days a week they run an infomercial at 10AM. The other 2 they run Joe Brown. Sometimes it changes week to week. And sometimes they run Joe Brown 5 straight days).

I had thought that ABC had pre-empted "The View", given that here in Boston, WCVB-5 ran "Good Morning America" until 12 Noon.

WCVB must have switched over to the West Coast feed of GMA,
which runs 10 AM-noon (ET). I wasn't home this morning (I
teach two classes on Monday) and can't say for certain, but
I can't think of any other explanation.

As anyone who has been or is in television can attest, the in-studio, off-camera carrying on of supposedly mild-mannered anchors would be a shock to a lot of viewers who think all is sweetness and light among the on-air folks. What was seen from Gibson was mild compared to some of the outbursts from the late Frank Reynolds and others.

Charles Gibson made another error over the course of the morning, as he called Sam Champion a meteorologist. All later references he used things as "weatherman". For the record Champion has no training as a meteorologist.<P ID="signature">______________

Charlie's not the only one -- when Sam Champion (WABC weatherman) appeared on CNN this evening (8/29), he was supered on screen as a "meteorlogist".
